Time for a new song

Xmas holidays are nearing, so for me that's the traditional time to create some new music for MSX.

This year I was thinking to arrange some Ys VIII (8) music, or maybe Xenoblade Chronicles 2, as these were the games I played throughout the year.

Other options are:
- killer7 (a GameCube game I've ported to Steam this year).
- Ni no Kuni (a PS3 game I'm porting right now).
- An original song (no arrangement, something new).

I was thinking about this (simple) Ys 8 song: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XhkaxG6Zyw
(it has a nice vibe to it and sounds very similar to other MSX Ys songs).

...but please let me know if you have better suggestions.

Target: OPL4, I'd guess, but let me know if you prefer some other soundchip instead.

I say, if it's made on MSX everything goes Smile It's the sound that makes a great deal of the joy. (I absolutely hate italo, but I love Impact oO ).
Please do surprise us, with anything.

Master. We're in a tight spot! A real tight spot. Like, I haven't seen you for ages. Wink
What song of the Killer7 soundtrack would you have in mind?
I assume/hope it'd be either Rave On or Tecks Mecks. I also like Geopolitics and Shoot Speed but those seem harder to do.
In the name of Harman...

I like the idea of creating some new music for the MSX for the xmas holidays (not that I have any holidays to speak of, otherwise it'd be a great excuse to try my hand at one myself).

Can't go wrong with some Ys, IMO. Ni no Kuni is interesting too, Joe Hisaishi makes some great stuff... not sure which track I'd recommend, has been a while since I played it. Either way, great to see MOA is still alive Smile

Hmm.. that Ys tune left me rather indifferent.
The sound did remind me of Etrian Odyssey, which would also be not too far from home (composer wise) ;-) Some suggestions here: The Withered Forest, Calling That Detestable Name, The End of the Raging Waves.

Or I dare you to do a cover of Psyvariar - Opening -VOID mix-! Big smile
(Excellent X-mas holiday project I'd say! ;-))

Or some Louis Cole, possibly.. :murdock:

I always liked the MSX's Zombie Hunter musics.

Thanks so far for all your reactions!

@ren: Etrian Odyssey is also one of my favorites. I occasionally listen to Cherry Tree Bridge (or play it on my piano). Also like your Louis Cole link! Did it go viral while I was hiding in my cave? Anyway, Etrian Odyssey is very suitable for conversion to MSX as the composer (Yuzo Koshiro) is basically using sampled FM synthesis for this game. Nice suggestion!

@JohnHassink: RaveOn seems to be very popular :) Good suggestion. I personally like the music during this scene [SPOILER ALERT!] (Steam version credits at the point where some familiar names might appear, edit: hm, timestamp doesn't seem to work on msx.org)

@Jorito: yeah, the music I've listened to so far from Joe Hisaishi is very good. Probably very hard to do justice in a chiptune or wavetable environment (as I'm not keen on sampling stuff and want to do things with ROM sounds when using OPL4 wave).

@Meits: So working on some MicroCabin music compilation? Interesting!

@Louthrax: So you like all of the Zombie Hunter songs? or you have a favorite one which is standing out. As it's PSG music, it leaves for a lot of interpretation when arranging it. That's a cool thing when it's a personal favorite, but I guess it still has to grow on me as I never even saw that game before :)

[MOD-EDIT]Switched youtu.be url to youtube.com/watch?v= URL so timestamps work in MRC's YouTube overlay[/MOD-EDIT]

Ha, nice to see it resonates! Still have to listen closer to some of the other EO tracks myself. When I first discovered some of the tunes, I def. got the feeling it resembled (to a degree) Ys/Sorcerian feels/quality.

Oh, and kinda wow, I just now discovered City of Radiant Ruin.. :)

Yousuke Yasui also came to mind, some great & fun tunes there, added to aforelinkedto playlist (+ an Hiroto Saitoh & + a Masaharu Iwata tune) ;-)

Nah, that didn't really go viral, relatively unknown, just good fun (These 'Live Seshes' are quite addicting.. ;-))

Fun fact: Yasui seems to be an MSX/Konami fan himself, he did a cover of Gradius Stage 2 ('Beat Back') (pretty funky (again)!) and SD Snatcher 'Difficult Move'. (Both to be found on his SoundCloud page.)

(The latter he made for mobile phone (ガラケー) or something? Not sure.. Does pale in comparison to his other work.)
