Hi. I have a Yamaha FB-01. Right now it's hooked up for use with my keyboard.

I'd like to use it with my MSX. I plan to buy a Midi-Pac v2 soon.

From what I've read, it possesses the same FM chip as the SFG-05. If I connect the FB-01 to the Midi-Pac - (please excuse my ignorance) will it be recognized and be able to play SFG-01/05 supported sound files/games (e.g., the latest enhanced version of Bosconian)?

I'd like this to be the case as finding a SFG-01/02 or RBSC's cart looks to be quite the challenge.

Thanks for your time!

I believe the Bosconian enhancement thing is directly sending commands to the registers of the ym2151, so you need a sfg-01/05 or a clone cartridge. There is no Midi data being sent so no Midi cartridge is going to send data to FB-01, including Midi Pac as Midi pac converts MSX Music (FM Pac, and psg in ver 2) to Midi. So does not convert Yamaha's ym2151 fm system. Until Midi pac supports it in the future, try asking the creator.

With midi pac 2 and fb-01, a normal bosconian game I think only had a psg music before the game, during the game its just SFX. So, that short 3 channel music can be automatically converted by midi pac v2 and you have to assign the instrument you want played on the fb-01. I have not used my fb-01 in a while but I think it has less channels/polyphony than MSX Music, so if you want to hear all channels from midi pac (from games supporting fm pac and psg), you need more sound modules across midi channels.

Slightly different use but, yamaha did provide a cartridge for msx to edit the sound of FB-01.

Thanks for the reply. Your answer was my gut assumption. If I can't find a SFG 01/05, I 'd really like to see more clone cartridges produced.

Thanks for expanding on the midi pac v2 and how it may function with the fb-01.I do plan to acquire additional sound modules.

MIDI pac has not much to do with SFG modules. MIDI pac emulated MSX-MUSIC and sends the output as MIDI for use on a MIDI sound module. So it only works with software that expects or supports MSX-MUSIC. Which is much more software than is available for the SFG, by the way.

I have a couple of SFG-01 and SFG-05 modules. Had to check how many of which at this moment but if you are interested you can send me an e-mail (address is on my profile page).

I appreciate the follow up responses.

And thanks, sdsnatcher73. I am interested. I'll follow up after the winter holidays.
