How many (and which) expansions possible on-board in an NMS 8250?

Hi all,

I was planning on expanding the memory of my yet unmodified NMS 8250 using a 1MB 30 pin SIMM. I have gathered nearly all the components (still looking for a 30 pin simm socket though. Anyone?), but since there are so many possible expansions, I was wondering how many I can install in one machine, and if there's an order to installing them.

I'd like to fit (at least) the following hardware:

1MB SIMM (unless I can find a 4MB SIMM)
SCC
FM-PAC and/or Moonsound
MSX2+
7MHz
...and more if possible.

Is that at all possible, and is there a certain order in which I have to install these options? Does any of these options cancel out any other's?

I once had a machine like that but it was built in an AT tower.
It was a Philips 8250 with:

  • 512KB RAM
  • 192KB VRAM
(backswitchable to 128KB VRAM because there were some programs that glitched with 192KB VRAM)
  • DOS 2
  • 7 MHz
  • FM-PAC
  • Moonsound
  • Novaxis SCSI interface with a 20MB and 40MB SCSI harddisk
  • Philips Music module
(the mentioned cardridges were mounted in a MSX Club Gouda Slotexpander 5.0 which stood firmly on the bottom of the case)
  • Slot 2 was redirected to a 5,25" bay on front of the midi tower
  • The display was configured to show 36 and 72 (for the 7MHz)
  • All audio expansions were connected to seperate outputs on the backside
  • I couldn't afford MSX2+, but it was simply possible

What you want is possible. But not all internal in an original 8250 case if you ask me... Some expansions should be left in their cartridge if you have an AT tower. I even wonder if the original PSU would be able to handle it Wink

Sidenote: I sold this beast for about 10 euros in 1999 because I ran out of tobacco oO The machine still lives and sometimes I envy its new owner Sad

You what?! Crying

Anyway, thanks for the info. I'll just add a tower and a can of anthracite paint to my shopping list Smile

I couldn't help it, I had to search the thing:

A closeup of the backside: All music expansions have two RCA connectors on the back and the switch was to toggle 128/192 KB VRAM

The mainboard side. Nothing much to see here. A friend of mine did the Tweety art. He still doesn't like the fact that I sold the thing :P

Don't know what they're up to, but the man in the middle owns the thing.

A lot of the expansions never got sold to him and are still standing on my desk :)

Ok, fair enough. But how about a contribution towards quitting smoking?

Bugger...

Any other habits that need supporting, or should I simply ask if you'd like to sell any expansions to me...?

My spare stuff is always at a friend of mine who uses it to make graphics which I again use to make music disks.
I've hit myself in the head in the past when I sold my stuff... Won't happen again Smile

Though, for a Philips 8250 a lot of new expansions are still available at Bas Kornalijnslijper (RAM, 7MHz, DOS2, 2+, sound correction on philipses, letting the bootscreen show what's really inside when it comes to RAM, boot at 60Hz default, fast diskrom... just not soundcards or anything for that matter, but they pop up once in a while here or on marktplaats (there's some interresting stuff on marktplaats right now))...
