hi

more trouble with my panasonic fs-a1wx. for some reason joystick port 1 doesnt seem to be working propely. it either doesnt recognise the joystick at all or recognises the lever movements but not the fire buttons. results vary depending on joysticks. i have used generic atari joysticks as well as mega drive ones. all work on other systems but not on the msx. anyone got any ideas?! is the port busted?

regards

Most likely the port is broken... Probably the point where the connector is mounted on the pcb...
often insertion of a joystick is no good for most ports... Sony 700/900 is notoriously known for it...

it should not be difficult to re-spin the soldering of the joy port

Look inside connector - are there bent or broken pins?

Someone of course can, the one whom you trust and who has small soldering iron and is able to use it... If it's really fixable may only be found after taking PCB out and expecting it.

ok i will have a look into it. i have a friend who is skilled with a soldering iron so maybe he can help. if not is there a service or person on these forums that can repair my msx? also i got this from ebay, would it be wrong for me to ask for a little of my money back (or if it doesnt all go to plan with the fix then a full refund anyway)? because obviously it isnt working 100% regards

Sega joysticks have one pin that needs to be connected to another port for MSX. You should check pin layouts for both MSX and Sega ports to find out which one. I don't know about the atari joysticks. Real MSX compatible joysticks can be obtained for about 5 euro. You should try those before wrecking your computer Wink

contacted the ebay seller. he said for me to clean the port pins/socket and try again. he is gonna write me a basic program to test with. so i ll try that before opening the computer! Wink also i know these sega controller and joysticks work fine on msx because they work perfectly in port 2.

Are you sure?
Sega and MSX joysticks have pins 7,8 and 9 swapped...

yep! definately works in port 2! just played a 2 player game with it! just cleaned the port, hasnt made a difference. might have another clean at it. i got a feeling the port maybe broken cos you have to wiggle the joystick socket in port 1 to get it working (apart from the fire button!).
