Hi,

I'm looking at buying a NMS 8280. The thing is that is has only one drive. I thought they came with two 720kb drives? Can't seem to find information otherwise, but the seller states it came in one and two drive configurations.

The question remains, did one drive take a walk out or are there actually 8280's with only one?

Not saying the seller is wrong, but for a 8280 I doubt it.

More likely a previous owner moved a drive from that 8280 to a 8250 (or something like that), and that's how the seller got it.

For the record: I can't imagine that would be of any importance in deciding to buy or not buy such a machine. A 2nd drive is easy to find, a 8280 is not.

I got mine with only one drive. There was an empty hole for the second and no cover, as the second drive was removed.
There was a 8250 with only 1 drive and 8255 with 2 drives. No more differeces between them.
There never was a 8280 with single drive, as there was no 8285, AFAIK.

Think about some advantages you get without second drive: spare room for a hard disk, memory card reader, a spare cartdrige slot, a place to set a fan... Smile

Originally the 8280 is with one drive, see the picture on the box.
There are sold a few with one drive. This versions are very rare.
The PCB's are a bit different.
And a little extra PCB for the Video-board, not the same as the FF006 versions. With one drive is the FF005
One of the first 8280 was given away to André van Duin and within a few months this computer had to repaired. Problems with the video-digitizer.
I do not know if this version is in the service manual
you have the most common versions that begins with serial number:
FF006, with single sided videoboard.
Low numbers without extra PCB
Higher numbers with extra PCB
2 drives with big eject buttons
FF017 the same as the 006, but with modern double sided video-board. And some cooling parts. Also a modified power supply

FF027 same as the FF017, with with modern drives with small eject button. Different cooling plate on top of the drives.

There are also different front-panels.
There are models where the text is missing: Video Computer.

Cool

Cool info indeed!

Bas, any idea what van Duin did with it? Apparently he did use it at the time...

In the past I got a 8280 with two drives as standard. About everything was great for use with fast copy.
