I can edit posts from days ago.

This Grauw posted as part of an edit summary (he removed the 1h limit claim I made there) for /wiki/MRC_FAQ_(troubleshooting)#How_do_I_edit_my_post.2Fcomment.3F
Eh..?
I kinda always notice I have 1 hour to edit my post (again), how come Grauw's experience is different? Does he have some privileges perhaps I don't have? (Didn't he used to be member of the team in the past (btw)?)

(edit: perhaps nice & informational the add a retired members section to /page/about-us?)

Hmm, I do have slightly elevated privileges which allow me to post news without moderator approval, maybe it’s part of that?

The thing which I’m most curious about is that reply or quote sometimes do lock the post that is replied to, but I have no clue under exactly what conditions, because it does not always seem to be the case, nor does it happen at the moment the button is pressed I think.

Tbh I think it would be nice if all these complicated post editing restrictions were just lifted, I don’t think they serve much purpose other than to annoy; today I had to rewrite a bit of text again because it was lost due to the post getting locked while I was editing it. Don’t know how easy that is though, if it’s just a setting or if it’s hardcoded into the forum software.

(And yes I used to be an MRC team member many years ago Smile.)

Thanks for the response. I meant to edit my post a bit to also direct you in a direct/personal fashion (as I knew you would prolly read this yourself as well Wink), but was unable to access the interwebs a while.

I'm not on too many forums (or alike), but where I'm at makes me believe indefinite editing is the norm (nowadays). Some show the complete edit history, others only the most recent, some only the date of edit etc.
The policy here seems indeed restrictive, and indeed annoying at times. I guess the general idea about that is (was) to preserve the integrity of a discussion(?) And I believe this was quite common 'back in the day' (this 'thing' is starting to get (real) old Wink) (wasn't it?). But it comes across as a bit untrusting or controlling towards the user(s) as well. OTOH having witnessed several dramas here (a thing of the past perhaps Wink), I'm sure some people would have removed or cleared their messages if they would have been able to. (A problematic thing or not?)

The 'buttons' themselves are simply links, I see no events attached, so should have no effect Wink. Personally I suspect it's the submit when using reply(?)

Regarding the wiki article: perhaps you could reinstate the 1h claim in some form? I've heard complaints from quite some people throughout the years, and I think they experience the same restrictions as I have.

Deparenthesise, ren, easier to read Wink.

Submitting from the reply or quote page, makes sense I guess since they are aware of the post number. So if you quote and then copy/paste it back to the reply form of the thread’s page, as I usually do, you avoid the lock.

If it turns out that the 1h thing is there after all I’m happy with it being reinstated… Just didn’t seem factual to me, so I removed it. Can you try to edit some of your old posts that weren’t replied to?

Deparenthesise, ren

I admit, there are many (at times) Wink

I can't, there's simply no edit button. And when I manually go to the edit URL I get:

You are not authorized to access this page.

That's what I usually do as well.

Nope! Did you post from the quote page or copy/paste it to the thread page?

Ok, well that’s clear then. I’ll update the wiki page in a sec. Nice to remove that writer’s note and just be definitive.
