If anyone who owns an HBM-512 could confirm this, I would suggest to remove the PCB image from the article, and to remove both the phrases “This cartridge is intended to be expandable to 1024 kB.” and “The PCB shown in the picture is not from the HBM-512: it’s a clone for a Philips case!” as well.

The pictures in the wiki ARE from a original Sony HBM-512 I still own. I took the photos myself... Smile

I’m gonna make some new pictures from the front and back of the PCB, and upload them to the wiki.

Thanks for clearing that up (and the new pictures)! Maybe there were two versions of the HBM-512’s PCB, and the service manual shows an earlier or later revision?

Re. the FM Blaster, EB = Eric Boez = Repro Factory… so I think there’s just some confusion on the branding (I think over time Eric also has used both brands?). Since @Meits added the Repro Factory entry, and @rderooy the EBSoft one, you guys just need to decide which to pick Smile. Imo Repro Factory is the name which I would refer to myself, but maybe the PCB or manual says otherwise…?

Sorry, I was wrong... The picture of that PCB was not made by me. It was added by Retrofan I think.
Just opened up the HBM-512, and the PCB is the same as in the service manual.
It also was modified, i think it was to make it work on a 7Mhz Philips NM8250.

Pictures are uploaded on the wikipage

Thanks! They look nice and sharp and shiny! Smile

And that settles it then. I’ve also removed that note about it being “intended to be expandable” as I suggested previously.

What is the PCB on the previous picture?

You mean this one right? I think only @retrofan may be able to answer, but since the picture was originally taken in 2009 even he may not know unless he took it himself.

I just made a new wiki page Monster Sound FM Blaster for it. Since the name does not include EBSoft or Repro Factory I think this is best.

Someone please upload a nice picture they have the rights to :). PCB pics would be nice as well.

The West Friesland FM-PAC and MK Public Domain FM-PAC were identical, just another label. Horrible stereo with drums left and music right.

I just made some pics of it. Will see if my brain can sort out how to add them.
If anybody beats me, they're here.
Be adviced that this PCB was modded from worst I ever heard to matching Moonsound.

Edit: If desired I can make a pic of the casing of the Shockwave 2 as well. It's screwed shut and the label covers one screw, so no nude pics of this one... yet...

The https://www.msx.org/wiki/MSX_font page should really be renamed to something like "MSX Character Set". Font is a misnomer.

To put it into modern terms, a FONT is something like "Times Roman", while a Character set is something like UNICODE. A font MAY not cover the entire character set, so it is not uncommon that you have different FONTS covering different regions, like Japan and China, but that does not suddenly make a FONT a Character set.

To put it into the MSX context, the MSX had different character sets for different regions. But likewise there may be different fonts, like the wide characters used on MSX1 and the narrow characters used on MSX2 when running in 80 column mode.

Or to put it into the context of MS-DOS and old windows versions, a character set is equivalent to a codepage.
