What about screen 4, does that work with 16kB VRAM?

Yes, it’s just screen 2 with sprite mode 2.

So the MSX1s with V9938 (e.g. Yamaha Cx5MII) can in theory play screen 4 games with unidirectional scrolling and 212 lines and palette and eight multicoloured sprites just fine. V9938 is quite a power-up even if you disregard the bitmap modes. If I'm ever going to make an "MSX1" game it's for that Smile.

Anyway, what would be a good description of the limitations of 16kB VRAM, instead of the one currently in the Wikipedia V9938 article?

I reckon: modes G4, G5, G6 and G7 will not be available. Since you don’t have enough RAM to fit them.

G4 can show half an image.... Smile But perhaps we should not call that 'available'.....

The PAL test would be good to try, as @Pentarou mentioned, a UK model would be PAL-I while a Dutch model would be PAL-B/G. Meaning you would get video but not audio over the RF connection.
Interestingly if it were to be an Australian model that somehow found its way to Europe, it would be a PAL-B/G model.

Of course this would be best tested on a retro TV as a modern TV may well autodetect and correct for the difference. Another way to test if a retro TV is not available, would be to record the output to a VHS over the RF connection and then play it back. VHS recorders are probably less likely to auto detect the PAL-I and PAL-B/G difference as they have not been made for a long time.

So I tested my HX-10 over RF today. It outputs on E36 but I need to redo the search when switching between this one and a Philips MSX (which are also on E36 but I guess slightly different). I have sound on my TV over RF after the search. So I dove into the manual setting and it had Sound System on auto, switched it do PAL-I -> no sound, switch to PAL-B/G -> sound. Either it was modified before being ‘dumped’ or it was intended all along for NL.

Actually with 16kB VRAM G4, G5, G6 and G7 will all show you half an image... G6 is practically useless and G7 will give you full screen wide 128x128 image.

I think we shouldn't. I'm sure that with 64K VRAM G6 and G7 can also be selected, but contrary to what one would expect (working but with 1 page) they also show half a screen due to the interleaved nature of the VRAM in those modes. So that is why it is said they are not available, and with 16K the same can be said of G4 and G5.

So, does someone know how to produce character 0x7F with the keyboard on a European MSX?

I think there's a small error in the SONY-HBF500 text, but since I've never seen a real unit I'm not 100% sure about it...

On the page regarding the Japanese SONY HB-F500 there's this text:

Quote:

The Japanese model has [...] an internal speaker

On this page there's a photo of the internal speaker.

Well, I doubt that's something manufactured by SONY: The wiring is ugly, the amp PCB is homemade and is hot-glued to the underlying PCB.
Moreover, the photo looks like it's from a PAL unit, because it's missing the RGB-21 connector and there's an external drive connector on the right. Compare it to this photo:

taken from: http://usbsecretbase.michikusa.jp/hb-f500/index.html

So, to me it looks like that photo is from some homemade modification, and the JPN version (probably) didn't have an internal speaker.

I don't thing it's homemade modification. Sony has probably released a customised version with monitor output and internal speaker instead of TV and composite outputs for professionals.
