1. indeed, the fact that there is an internal slot expander is not known by the debugger. So you will see in the debugger what is selected in the internal slotexpander.
2. as I already said, the flashROM is empty by default. But the sha1sum (or filename) in the config is a ROM file that is only read if the extension is used for the first time. Remove the sram file to simulate this. Only then this ROM file will be used as the initial content of the MFR SCC+ SD flashROM.
3. Instead of this, you can of course also flash the individual ROM parts as you would do on real hardware, using OPFXSD.
4. I don't see why you would embed the MFR XML into a machine config XML. Not necessary at all. Well, it saves you from inserting the extension...

Is that the use of the openMSX ROM file in the MFR SCC+ SD web site?

You got it! That's exactly the purpose. This way you can have your MFR cart preflashed, just like the one you get from the msxcartridgeshop.
