If you intend to choose machines for emulation you'll probably be able to run most stuff with the Panasonic FS-A1GT. Since it is a turboR, it's capable of running most software and it has 512kB of RAM, which can be very helpful outside the world of games. If you intend to run a lot of MSX1 European games you may run into some compatibility problems, though. The huge number of machine options in OpenMSX can be overwhelming, but you can learn a lot about real MSX hardware by looking at them and comparing with the MSX-Wiki.

Learning stuff all the time!

So I've unzipped all of my MSX files, and the majority are .dsk files, and almost all of the rest are .rom files. But there is a small number of .MX1 files. Are those cassette games?

They are probably just ROM images as well. Just try them as such.
