Well this is what actually happens, atleast with fMSXSO:

as you can see the game still finishes when you not take the left ladder. This makes Jennifers brother a bigass fat liar, better walk back in and spank him :D

Yesterday I replayed Metal Gear.
But in contradiction to what is mentioned here I can only finish the game using the left stair?
I used OpenMSX and a retranslation of the game.

The game is designed to be finished taking only the left ladder.
But there is a bug that makes it possible to be finished taking any of them if Snake is not centered in the ladder, but a bit to the left.
The reason is that at the end of each ladder there is a collision tile to prevent the player going any further.
But this tile (actually, two tiles) are at the left side of the lader and the collision routine checks the left and right parts of Snake. And the collision tile is "in the middle" of Snake.

The highlited tiles in red are the collision tiles. The blue areas are where the collisions are checked.

There are two not centered positions at the left. A bit and a bit more...
I only tried one of them....

I think it would be nice if this were fixed, preferably for European, Japanese and remixed versions. Not sure if just adding extra collision tiles to the left and right of the existing ones is enough (and doable).

I wouldn't personally fix non game-breaking bugs... Those are a curiosity and harmless. Who knows, perhaps this was even intentional to some degree... Cool

I just tried it too, and haha it works!

I wouldn't change it. Honestly, it's just a quirky thing that very few people would either know about or even attempt. It turns out that even without extending the timer with Cigarettes, the player can climb up and down the first two ladders and still have enough time to escape on the third one.
