The only thing I'll never get it in this community is why people choose to get angry with something that should only bring joy, since it is a hobby. To me the best solution is give away for free the software you develop for hobby (that's what I do). Let's see why:

1) You will never get enough money (by selling your msx software) to pay for all the many hours of work you spent developing it. As a matter of fact, I believe the profit should be so small that it probably won't allow you even to buy the tools (hardware and software) you need to develop your game. So what's the point?

2) I understand some people (I'm one of them) likes to release their game on a nice box with manual and a printed cartridge/CD/disk. You can still do this while allowing free download of your software. And it won't hurt your sales, because most of the people that buy cartridges for ancient computers/consoles do so despite the fact that they can get the games for free. If you doubt that, see how many people here bought/buys Konami and other classic MSX games despite the fact they had the games they bought for years! We (the people that actually buys msx software) like to have a nice box/cartridge/manual of our games. I bought Knightmare Gold from Daniel Caetano (and the most expensive version) despite the fact that he announced the game would be freely available to download. So, your sales probably won't get much hurt by allowing your software to be freely downloadable. And even if the sales get hurt, how huge would they be anyway?

3) The only software that is never pirated are: 1) Those that are already freely available or 2) Those that suck so bad no one will care to copy them (although I sincerely doubt this is true, there are people that copy everything, no matter how bad it is). So, all commercial software eventually gets pirated. If you can't deal with this, don't develop software.

4) If you sell it, you need to provide some warranty (if you are a honest guy, of course). That can bring some trouble/work/money loss if the software/cartridge has problems. If I give it for free, I don't have to give support. Of course I do give support, but I do because I want, not because I have to. And if someday I don't want to do it anymore, that's it. No one can complain about something they received for free, right?

For these and another reasons, I think giving away the software you develop as a hobby is the best solution. It works really good for me, lots of people told me they enjoy using it, I read nice reviews on the web about them, and I don't need to worry if anyone will ever pirate it simply because that wouldn't make any sense. Smile In other words, it couldn't be better. I recommend it.

I have a policy... everything I do in the MSX scene is open for everyone (except PHP code and my passwords)

However ... everyone has the right to sell... where I have the right to choose to buy or not... if I don't buy it I don't play it.

See for the sonyc cartridge. Everybody has the free disk but even though 30+ people answered to buy it. But of course you can' t compare cartridges sales with downloads hits. Also, cartridges are only the the people who still have real msxs.

Hahaha!!! I open a thread to ask for keyboard support in the game, and it comes to this show!
Kralizek, Ramones or whoever you are, this is VERY funny!:
-You create a game based on copyrighted characters and names.
-You take FREE FPGA implementations of the SCC and PSG chips, and incorporate them in your cartidges.
-You hope you can decide who can and who can't play your game: people on emulators? No, they are not allowed! People on Altera DE1? No! Those are not MSX machines by our stantards! Big smile
-People finds a way to play your game for free since you're trying to force them into using them the exact way you want.
-You get angry and quit.

Grow up. People will ALWAYS use software the way they want to: that's a reality that can't be avoided. And the more you try to constrain them in the way they use your software, the more will they hack their way to use it the way they want.

Falafel, or whatever your name is, you should be very, very ashamed of yourself. I am flabbergasted by your total lack of respect.

In fact, most of you should be very ashamed of yourselves. The MSX Related Community (MRC) can add another notch on its belt of destroyed MSX projects and/or people.

It's been going on for 8 years... 8 more years until you've succeeded in killing the MSX scene completely?
