I showed this game to my little child yesterday (nice game!) and just got an idea at the same time:

As those competitors in that game are japanese game heroes, why not make "european version" too? Smile Game engine could be (at least almost) the same, just new hero sprites are needed to design. That was Just an idea. Smile But of course a better idea would be to design entirely different game which uses 1980s european and american game heroes and baddies! Big smile

But anyway here are just some suggestions of heroes, which would look good in "european version of heroes arena" when making "front and back" versions of them: Smile

Stanley (Livingstone I Presume)

Pepsiman (Mad Mix Game)

Eskimo (Shark Hunter)

Bertie the Bee (Buzz Off!)

Mutant Monty

Fairy (Elidon)

the Flea (Booga Boo)

I would say Monty (Auf Wiedersehen Monty), but he will look funny if he is facing or showing his back towards you. Smile But Monty can be done by showing his face from the side. Maybe facing left/right frames would be needed. Smile

Sexy Sue (just legs and thighs are visible) (Kick It!)

Hero (H.E.R.O.)

Fighter plane (River Raid)

Worker (Rock´n´Bolt)

Chuckie Egg

Willy (Manic Miner and Jet Set Willys)

Disc Warrior

The Blob (or Thing or whatever it was called) (Starquake)

Rockford (Boulder Dash)

(white and black) Spy (Spy vs. Spy II)

Magic Knight (Knight Tyme etc)

Molecule Man (not very popular, I know, but "he" is a cute and kind looking character anywaySmile)

Biker (Speed King)

Dynamite Dan

Batman

Quasimodo (Hunchback)

Pink Panther (Les Flics and Pink Panther)

Jack the Nipper

Robot (Alien 8)

Knight Lore

Nightshade

Lazy Jones

Problem here is the different graphic style of the european heroes. But it's up to Imanok to decide...

For this kind of thing a 'user generated players' option may be nice, similar to that "Robot Wars II" game (never knew the real name).

Anyway, then you could make your own sprites with some editor and save/load them from disk to be used in the game.

Yes, I also gave a thought about different graphical style, as "in general", japanese game characters are short and fat. Wink And some european game characters may not look as good if they are "straightly" used the way they are. And if they get shortened and fattened, they may not look same enough. But I still wanted to tell my idea. Smile

John´s idea sounds good.

By the way, I have never heard of that Robot Wars "sequel". You mean hack of Aacko-/Eaglesoft´s Robot Wars?

Cool as that would be, unfortunately not. It has nothing to do with the real Robot Wars game.
It was on a disk from my father's collection, and the sticker said "Robot Wars II".
This title must have been born from someone's fantasy who could not read the Japanese title.
I don't have the disk anymore and couldn't read it either back then. Sad

So, watch screenshots on Generation MSX and tell us which game it is!

Or... tell us more about the game and we can help Smile

At Heroes Arena, all characters share the same structure: 3 sprites for the upper half of the character (2 with the same colour and the 3rd with a different colour) and 3 sprites for the lower half of the character (following the same rule than the upper part).... and that rule stays the same for most of the character frames (walking, jumping, etc). You can check how sprites are quartered with meisei.

So, it's quite hard to design the characters to fit that rule and get a nice result (apart from that, most of the characters MäSäXi suggested are monochromatic -and pretty ugly-).

I think it's a better idea to focus in new games, don't you think so?? Wink

What I had in my mind was to "bring them life", make them multicoloured sprites. Smile Beautifulness and ugliness is in the viewer´s eye, as we say in Finland. Smile And I didn´t say it is easy job for every character.

I think it's a better idea to focus in new games, don't you think so??

Why you focus in old games then? Tongue

You're right, I'd like to know the real name indeed.

Well: it's an MSX2 game for sure.
You start off on a 'strategic' grid map, like with those gundam games.
If I remember correctly, there are blue cities which are yours, and red cities which belong to the enemy.
Apart from that, there are grey cities which are neutral and to be conquered by either side.
Winner is the one who eventually rules all cities on the map.

Both armies have robots of different types at their disposal, and you can direct them on the map, over land, water etc. and towards cities.
When two robots of different sides meet, the game switches to a realtime battle mode.
Some robots are faster than others, can/can not jump and have different weapon types.

Anyway, the game has a kind of built-in graphics designer to create your own robots with. Literally place every pixel yourself and even pallette modification I think.
You can change their aspect on the map and in battle mode, select their transport type and weapon etc. A little bit like in Girly Block.
Anyone know what it is?

That's true... I've never heard any parents saying their child is ugly Tongue

Anyway, I know we both have different tastes concerning GFX style in games... I guess this is because of your C64 (and Atari?) roots.

And I didn´t say it is easy job for every character.
Believe me, it's not.

Not games made by me! Smile

Now I see I shoud have written "focus in MAKING new games" Tongue

John: it sounds a bit like Great Strategy (Daisenryaku) type of games...
