Well, Sandy helped me out, again Smile The long file-name issue should be solved now. If someone could do a small check I'd be very gratefull.

That is good to hear. Now I can start thinking about adding other stuff.
I'd like to thank everyone for helping, testing and thinking thinking with me!

Well, we're almost 2 years down the road and I can say that my Gr8net server is not a real success. Probably not that strange, considering there is only a big .ROM collection there with .ROM's everyone already owns and has them installed on their own machines (as Fixato rightly pointed out to me).

I was considering updating the server with the .ROM's that were added/found/released recently, but... considering how much the service is being used I don't think I'm going to invest my time in this.
There is also no need to shut down the server, as it's not really costing any resources. But maybe I can do something better with it?
If I were to give my gr8net server an overhaul: What would you like to see on a gr8net server? And maybe also another question: How many people actually own a gr8net and how many of those actually go online with them on a regular basis?

I don't have a gr8net but I would like to invest in a network card for MSX in the future.
My intended use is purely for gaming. I would like to add network support in MSXgl to make it easy to create network games on MSX.
So, one feature that would be really useful in this respect is a "lobby" server that allows to create a game session that other players can join. I already had the opportunity to create such a server so I could help to set it up.

I have a gr8net and barely use it because there is little I can do with it.

I think we have a bit of a catch22 here: few people with network cards because there is no software; and no software because few people with network cards.

Maybe if somebody comes up with a super cheap network cartridge (15-20EUR) and a blockbuster game things would change. Otherwise you always get the same thought: why do you need networking on an MSX?

I use it a lot. It it much more convenient to update software (during development of software) using ftp than removing the SD card all the time. Less wear on the cartridge sd slot as well. I also use my GR8NET as OPL4.

I would also be very interested in this information!

There're more than 200 people having GR8NET. My info for now: some of them do not have wired internet, do not know how to wire it through Wi-Fi, do not bother with network at all using SD-card.

Edit: probably I need to make this as new section in the "How do I?" chapter and explain how connecting Wi-Fi and wired networks could be done.

There's one inconvenient thing: if GR8cloud is turned in GR8NET on, and if there's no network, adapter boots much slower because it tries to locate the volume. I do not see there's a key to override the feature on the boot, and a I do not see it in my GR8NET ROM because it is in Nextor driver. Pressing F5 on the boot disables GR8cloud in Nextor (documented on the page 154 of the manual). Anyway it would not be convenient to remember pressing GR8cloud disable key every time machine (re-) boots. I suspect this will need to be pressed on hard boot/reset only, soft boots will keep this setting. But it does not help much...

Edit: I should definitely mention F5 in the chapter 2.2. By the way, section 2.3 on the page 54 shows boot-up menu help with all the keys available to configure GR8NET during its startup.

We can use MQTT with username/password authentication (no TLS unfortunately, at least in GR8NET). We will only need MQTT broker running on the network somewhere.

Edit: I propose making it a separate topic because it is not related to GR8cloud and a relatively big matter.

I also see it to be very useful during development.

I am open to any useful suggestions! And I am actually very glad for you all for raising this issue!

Using this opportunity I want to ask you again if you have issue or suggestion with GR8NET please also write to me as I can not watch many locations for requests or issue reports on regular basis.

Edit: would be great if I can configure my forum account to send me email for every post having "gr8net" word in it, but I do not know if it is possible...

I love that idea, and always wanted to be able to play msx games vs others over the internet. It would be awesome to have support to play certain games online. I always wanted to create an online multiplayer game for msx.

A game like this:

Would be awesome on msx, in multiplayer format !
I would love to work on that if there is support to play it online with 2 people !
