a mode 7 would rather be something that comes after MSX3.
Now I imagine that 9990 makes the sprites, then comes mode 7, and then 9958 rolls some YUV background. Then the mode 7 is above the 9958.
Then a 9958 + mode 7 project would need the ability to flip the priority of the two layers.

On the other hand, mode 7 is quite special, can't make DOOM.
And that flips over to whole different topics
can the vdp cartridge run on a speed slot that has everything shameless clocked up to 21mhz
does the wait pin work

what about alternating vram writes and command engine writes with a high clocked z80.
maybe with sprites turned off it works and then one gets twice transfer rate to vram.
those are the DOOM questions.

And a 9958 cartridge can give a TurboR a faster 9958, the internal one has a brake that makes vram transfer of MSX1 speed.

anyone ever try to test if 9958 can be overclocked regardless of the bad video output signal timmings that it will output.

I mean, to prepare a special board with faster vram better cooling, set it with a RGB monitor, and see if it can go 25% faster, and adjust the monitor H/V for running faster, just by the art of experiment.

Ok @hit9918, call me a dumbass because I didn't understand a thing you said. LOL!

Do YOU, as a coder, prefer:

  1. A V9958 cartridge with internal VDP superimpose (and digitize?)
  2. A V9990 cartridge with internal VDP superimpose (and digitize?)
  3. An non-standard video mode created from scratch that allows me to code a DOOM clone to MSX
  4. None of the above; Lets code for plain V9958 and forget video add-ons

@flyguile I'll look for a spare V9958 and see if it can be overclocked... I'm rather skeptical about how far we can go in pratice, because our VDP probably is a NMOS LSI (i"m not sure about that, but CMOS devices weren't common that time), and there's not much room to overclock NMOS devices... I'm not sure when I'll be able to do that, so if anyone want to do that fell free to give it a try before me.

This is clearly the way forward. No need of new hardware, we have a lot of unused hardware. Ive tried a few things in MSX2+ and it's very promising, we can do big things for it.

Sorry to insist, but will anyone use/code for any V9990 cartridge if it requires two displays?

I particurally don't like very much external outputs as V9990 or OPL4. If I should decice, I prefer to develop for plain MSX2+ or even MSX turbo R. The MSX turbo R is an unexplored frontier, it's great CPU and good amount of RAM (256KB minimum) should allow totally new games for MSX as good adaptations of PC classics as Warcraft or Baldur´s Gate.

I do want to create a product with V9990 support someday, but needing a second display or scart switch isn’t exactly its strongest point…
