When playing Elite on MSX, you'll notice that for each destroyed ship you'll obtain points. 100 For an Adder, 30 for a Boa Class Cruiser, 150 for a Thargoid, and so on. On average, not counting the Constrictor and the Asteroid a kill on MSX Elite will award you 73.8 points. To get the rating of Mostly Harmless, at 2,000 points, you will therefore need to have killed some 27 ships. Likewise, you'll get the rating of Poor after about 54 kills or 4,000 points.

On Ian Bell's Elite FAQ (http://www.iancgbell.clara.net/elite/faq.htm), a table notes the number of kills needed to advance the rankings on the C64, BBC and Apple II platforms. These appear to be considerably lower than what is needed on MSX. See the table below.

Nr. Rating BBC kills MSX Score MSX kills
--- --------------- --------- --------- ---------
0. Harmless
1. Mostly Harmless 8 2,000 27
2. Poor 16 4,000 54
3. Average 32 8,192 111
4. Above Average 64 16,384 222
5. Competent 128 32,768 444
6. Dangerous 512 131,072 1,775
7. Deadly 2,560 655,360 8,875
8. Elite 6,400 1,638,400 22,188

I have never played this game on any of the other platforms, so I don't know if this is correct, but this table seems to state that the grind to become Elite on MSX is much higher than on the other three platforms, indeed, one would be Elite on a BBC before becoming even Deadly on an MSX.

Does anyone know if all this is true, and if so, what are the numbers for other platforms and why do they differ at all, let alone by so much?

In any case, whenever someone my age tells me they were Elite, I'll ask them what platform.

The MSX version of Elite has many changes from standard versions. For example Military Lasers are only available on Tech 14 worlds and other versions only go up to Tech 12 I think.

I've played Elite on many different platforms, 8-bit and 16-bit and it's much easier to get to Elite on 16 bits than the 8s.
C64 takes forever to get to Elite, but it's possible, Spectrum and Amstrad are slightly easier. MSX Elite is just let down by the fish-eye effect when attempting to dock but editing save games to get a Docking Computer is easy.

It would be interesting (at least to me) to know why these differences are there. In any case, I'm expecting an OMNI 128HQ Laptop ZX Spectrum (https://retroradionics.co.uk/#!/OMNI-128HQ-LAPTOP/p/75106221/category=29185006) in the next few weeks and I'm anxious to see when I'm Mostly Harmless on that platform.

I think basically the differences are there because different developers tried to 'improve' or adapt versions to each computer. In the case of the MSX version it was Mr Micro.

Yeah I indeed Elite has some unique ships too I believe. Weirdest to me is that apparantly the disk version and the tape version differ from eachother: I think both versions have extra ships that the other version does not have. Also I noticed a weird thing with the disk version. My original doesn't let me save or load from disk on a turbo r. But another version I have does. So maybe there are even multiple disk versions.

Ever since Louthrax discovered that there are different ships in the tape and disk version, I hope that it will be possible to also get the extra ships in the disk version. Before that I always thought I just didn't find the ships in the game.

At least there are no Tribbles in the MSX version, but which are the missions you can absolve?

Are there tribbles in a version? Some coder watched too much Star Trek?

The player is offered a total of three missions in the C= game version:

  • When the account balance of 6583.5 Cr is reached for the first time, the player can purchase "Trumbels". This is not actually a mission, but it does present the player with a task.
  • After 256 firings and in the first or second galaxy, the player is offered to search for and destroy the stolen prototype of a battleship. The reward is 5000 Cr.
  • After completing the previous mission and 1280 firings and in the third galaxy, the player is offered to transport blueprints for a new battleship halfway across the galaxy. Here, countless battles with Thargoids and an improved energy unit are offered as a reward.

Sunskim to fry the suckers.

I have added to an existing Save game editor for disk MSX Elite I also added to an Amstrad version. As for the Cassette it's very similar to the disk but just use a HEX editor on the save files after they are converted to CAS or TSX.
