This occurred to me the other day, and while I don't personally have the skills to accomplish a programming feat like this (yet!), I imagine it must be possible with a bit of effort. I mean, if MSX games can be reverse-engineered and fan-translated, and even have areas finished off and unlocked that weren't in the final release (thinking of the Melancholia patch for SD Snatcher here), then surely this must be doable too!
I discovered Akanbe Dragon a while back, and the game is gloriously absurd and just a TON of fun. Almost a perfect gaming experience, except for the fact that it's 1-player only -- and chess/Archon-style games like this thrive as 2-player experiences!
Here's a playthrough video of the game in action:

So, yeah, while playing the game recently, I was thinking... even though the official release of the game is 1-player only, wouldn't it be possible for some enterprising programmer to decompile the game's code and alter it to support 2 players?
I'm sure there would be complications, but I also think it might make for a really cool project for someone to undertake, and the resulting game would be an absolute blast to play with a friend.
Just something I figured I'd put out there, in case anyone wanted to give it a shot. ;)
