Sorry for being late. I went home looking for a note I wrote about the Gall Force magic key 32 years ago.
It is the second joystick port that is electrically shorted.

The genuine magic key electrically shorts the terminals 1, 2 and 8.
The secret magic key electrically shorts the terminals 3, 4, and 9.

No.2 joysticck port
+ ----------------------- +
  \ 1o 2o 3o 4o 5o /
   \ 6o 7o 8o 9o /
   + ----------- +
"o" means terminal.

I took a picture, but I don't know how to upload it in this comment section. Please let me know.
I dragged the photo into "insert / edit image" and it just appears in a separate window.
The extension is JPG. Is this bad?

For the time being, I uploaded it to YOUTUBE.

Thank you for your comment.
I learned this from an article in a Japanese magazine.
It's been over 30 years ago, so I forgot what magazine it was.
Since it was a small article, Japanese MSX users may have forgotten it.

I don't remember for sure, but the article said that the Secret Magic Key was programmed for use only within the HAL Laboratory program room.

If "TRIG2 POWER UP" is turned on, the difficulty level of the game will be broken, so it seems that only the genuine version of the magic key was distributed to the market.

Thank you.
A picture of Hitachi MB-H1 is drawn on the memo paper I brought from my parents' house (120km away), but since the MSX is heavy, I chose Canon's MSX.

Change the ips file that can be downloaded from here by 1 byte.
Then you can change it for a secret magical key.

Data content of ips file
50 41 54 43 48 01 AE 4F 00 02 3E 0C 45 4F 46

50 41 54 43 48 01 AE 4F 00 02 3E 03 45 4F 46

The Gall Force file that has been confirmed to start is
(MD5 Hash)
e83b59597e53ffb1c424469488a9210c
(SHA-1 Hash)
abe52920e895c148851649ecb9c029fdc41a275f

(Because it is Google's English conversion, there may be strange expressions)

Thanks for the ips fix!

Btw, is Gall Force the only game that can use the magical key? or are there more HAL games that can use it?

Well, I searched on the internet but it doesn't seem to be there.
I tried several HAL Laboratory software on blueMSX, but there was no change.

I think it will be reflected only in Gall Force.

-------------------------------------------------- ------------
By the way, the name of the magazine that mentioned the secret magic key was "Monthly Login".
I also confirmed that other magazines also mention Magic Key.
It wasn't on the market, and it was a lottery as a gift.

Thanks for the info, history + video, abura-chan! And indeed it looks like the special buttons of an FM Towns controller should work as these magic and special magic keys, but probably it's annoying to keep them pressed
