Trick to jumping through stones in Goemon?

Hey guys,

Was wondering if anyone knows what the deal is with jumping through stones in Ganbare Goemon. I managed to make it to the fourth stage of the second precinct, but in order to complete the stage, I need to cross over to the staircase at 48:35 in this longplay:

And the game only allows you to jump over three stones at once if your sandals are maxed out -- any more than that, and it prevents you from making the jump at all.

Every single approach to this staircase requires jumping over at least 4 stones at once, which should be impossible -- but the game evidently expects you to do it anyway, and the guy playing this longplay is somehow able to pull it off. I just can't figure out how.

Anybody able to shed some light on this? I don't have the manual for this game (only a loose cartridge), so I'm wondering if maybe there's a key gameplay feature I'm missing or something, as it seems odd Konami would *expect* players to exploit a bug.

Thanks, to anyone who can help!

-Tom

Aha! I figured it out.

In case anyone else decides to play this far into Goemon, the trick is to pretend like you have the ability to jump diagonally in this game (even though it's locked to 4-directional movement). As long as your sprite is facing up or down, you just need to hold both directions for something that would constitute a valid diagonal jump (as in, no more than 3 rocks between you and an empty space), then press the jump button, and the game will process a successful jump in the vertical direction, landing you on top of a rock.

...Kind of lame that Konami expected people to exploit this as part of required gameplay, but now that I know about it, I'm able to do it just about every time, so at least it's not holding me up anymore.
