Being the original hardware enthusiast I am, I enjoy playing Metal Gear 2 a lot on the MSX and would like to know which cartridge would be the best for saving game progress. A full playthrough of Metal Gear 2 is a little over two hours for me and I don't want to save my game to disk anymore due to the belt wearing out.

Either use password system (that just sucks) or have an original game master 2. This cartridge has some s-ram to store game situations. This is the only option if you don't want to use password or disk saves.

I tried the password system once and was unsuccessful. One of the characters I had to type in for the password I couldn't find on the keyboard. Would this work? https://www.ebay.com/itm/MSX-PANA-AMUSEMENT-CARTRIDGE-S-RAM-...

As Meits wrote, the Game Master 2 cartridge is the only way to save to SRAM. As MG2 is a Konami game, the Panasonic device is not supported.

As already mentioned, you need the right SRAM cartridge for the game.

The Game Master 2 SRAM and the PAC SRAM are incompatible with each other.
For a (incomplete) list of games supporting each SRAM cartridge, have a look here:

Metal Gear 2, use Game Master 2, press CTRL + STOP, save game data, quit the menu, press stop and continue playing.
Same method for loading the save states.

Or use a tool like the one made by Tiny Yarou:

Weirdly enough I haven't read about it here before. Ofcourse you then need an (FM)PAC or Turbo R.

If you use SofaRun on a device like the MegaFlashRom, you can run the rom, and in settings, you can select Game Master 2 Wink

I was just going to suggest: perhaps someone can write a generic patcher to adjust games that use SRAM to make use of any type of existing SRAM Tongue
