Hi,

I have this very good looking NMS-8245 which I got a while back. The FDD is not working anymore (common issue) but I am not very technical on the hardware side. Also I am thinking about modding it a bit.

Who could help me fix/replace the FDD and maybe modify it to an MSX2+? Just the V9958 chip and 2+ BIOS if that is possible. What other modifications are possible? RAM? MSX-MUSIC?

I live in Limburg, NL so if you are in NL that would be preferable (considering travel/shipping expenses).

Hoping to hear from someone/anyone Wink .

Cheers,
Peter

Oh and an overview of price of individual upgrades would be appreciated!

Obviously better if you find someone in your country, there are very experienced users in Netherlands anyway you could consider as an option, the Spanish team VAJ Lehenak. They are also modding some MSX models and showing all the process (step by step) in their Youtube channel.

Not sure about how many modifications are possible for this model, check the Hans Otten's website, there are some of them. Personally I would avoid to repair or upgrade the FDD (it's obsolete nowadays) and invest the money in a Megaflash cartridge with mass storage interface built-in. On the other hand some Philips models need a sound fix, confirm if the 8235 needs it too.

Repair-Bas' website has a bunch of (Dutch) tutorial documents for various upgrades and repairs for various models. I don't think he still does the repairs himself, but I could be mistaken.

Hi, thanks for all that info. It does not seem possible for this machine to be upgraded to MSX2+ (at least no guide exists on these 2 sites), I guess I will try to sell this machine and use the money as a start for buying a Japanese MSX2+.

Try to ask Hans Oranje or Bas via email. I wouldn't know why it wouldn't be possible.

User daniel683104 buys Japanese MSXes (mostly MSX2+ machins), refurbishes them and then sells them. Things he does/did is adding RAM, adapt them for 220 volts, insert a new diskdrive (beltless), replacing the capacitors and probably more. The prices he asks are not cheap. You spend at least € 300,- for an MSX2+, but if you add all the costs he made, risks he took and labour he put into it it really is a bargain. I bought a few of his machines and am happy with his service. Keep track on him if you want to be sure you receive a power MSX without having to gamble on Japanese auction sites.

Thanks and I'm in contact with him already. Unfortunately the mod to 220v is no longer available (the guy who did that stopped doing so). It is a lot of money but the machines are becoming scarce and I feel I should have at least 1, and get a MegaFlashROM SD variant to go with it. Makes the life of the MSX'er a bit more pleasant Wink

you can buy a transformer for 220v and same output as the one inside.

For some machines conrad has perfect internal transformers in stock. But unfortunately this one only goes for the turbo R. The MSX2+ models of Panasonic can't handle this specific transformer. I don't know how the Sonys handle this one though. Would be worth an investigation since the latest Sony I bought from him is still 100 volt and needs a stepdown converter.
If you walk the path of a stepdown converter, be sure to pick a Japanese one because the easily available Americans can become meltdown converters easily.
They're a bit tricky to find in your direct neighborhood, but they're worth it.

What? I put the same transformer into my Panasonic MSX2+ as I put into Turbo R. Works just fine.
