Considering the fact you specifically ask for the best soundchip for playing games, there is really only one answer, the MSX-MUSIC chip. This chip is available in the original Panasonic FMPAC, but this device is very hard to find. There are also a lot of hardware 'clones' of the FMPAC, but again.....I think they're pretty hard to find too. It is also possible to get an internal MSX-MUSIC chip inside your MSX2. Right now, the only person I can think of who could help you with this is Bas Kornalijnslijper from MSX Club West-Friesland.
What I also remember is the fact that very recently, some Brasilian or Spanish project started producing hardware devices with the MSX-MUSIC chip again. Right now, I don't have more info on this device. I do think it would be the most interesting possibility for you. And also the cheapest, I think.
Maybe there's something on this site, please check the 'Site Search' option. Or maybe there's another forum poster who has more info on this? More help would be greatly appreciated!
i got an original panasonic fmpac. Want it? i dont need it anymore. i think
I forgot, if you want to play Konami games, they often make use of the SCC (Sound Custom Chip)....This soundchip was integrated in every (!) original Konami gamecartridge which supported SCC. Over the years, many cracked diskversions of Konami games appeared and people started using the SCC inside an original gamecartridge to get original SCC sounds while playing a diskversion of another Konami game.
Sooo.....You better start looking for original Konami gamecartridges at ebay or something. Make sure the game you find has this SCC chip, though. If you would, you could post the Konami game you're intending to buy here on the forum. We'll tell you if this game has a SCC chip or not.
O, and erhm.....People started putting switches inside this Konami gamecartridges, coz you have to insert the gamecartridge while the computer is on. And this can be dangerous. Booting the MSX2 with the Konami gamecartridge already inserted makes the computer boot the original Konami gamecartridge and you don't want that. You want to play a diskversion
And then.....suddenly......Mark Jelsma comes falling out of the sky to bring happiness into the life of 4play
Indeed! I wouldn't mind getting that FM-PAC either ^^;
I used to own an original FM-PAC, but I sold it back in 1991 when I got a MSX2+. But I miss the SRAM sometimes, and then ofcourse there's the coolness factor of the japanese manuals and that weird mouse smiling at you
The Brazilian Technobytes (this is a link) make new MSX-MUSIC cartridges. I don't know if there are any european distributors, but importing is always an option.
Thx GuyveR800, cheers.
