Hello all
I am traveling to Japan soon and I want to visit stores that sell vintage computers / videogames. I know of Super Potato and Sofmap, but do you guys over in Japan have anything else to recommend? I heard of Hard-Off but those seem way too far from Tokyo. Any other suggestions?

Thanks

When you are around the Akihabura area, Super Potato, Trader (2nd Floor contains retro games and even some MSX stuff), Retrogame are pretty decent.

Hard Off / Book Off / Off Hobby stores are spread around various cities in Japan, even outside of the general Tokyo area. These tend to have a lot of newer generation games going back to Playstation 1 discs in the main isle areas area where they keep their games displayed, but at some of the bigger stores (Hard Off and Off Hobby) they keep really old games in pull out bins located in the back of the store and are very cheap.

If you are visiting the Tokyo / Chiba area, my favorite store to visit has several locations, at least 3 or 4 that I've seen called "Chiba Kantei Dan" or Chiba Appraisal Group. They have everything under the sun at these stores, and a vast collection of Retro games.

Hope this helps and have fun in Japan! : ) I love to visit there.

Thanks for the tips! Do you know the address for the Chiba kanteidan? I googled for it but could not find it.

The two parallel streets to the west of Chuo Dori and north of Super Potato are full of "junk" stores with a lot of hardware. If you're patient you can find some nice machines. I remember seeing a PC-6001, a TurboR FS-A1ST and lots of PC-9801. Sadly there're a lot of stores that aren't at street level; so it's really hard to imagine that in a third floor is a nice hardware shop Tongue

That sounds like a nice place to visit next time I visit Akihabura. Akihabura was one of the few locations where I could find MSX games and hardware, as not many game stores or junk places had these and I didn't come across any PC-8801/9801 stuff while I was there.

pmack, the Chiba Kantei Dan stores have a website, I'd check here first: http://www.chibakan.com/
