This is the idea:

I have a real MSX TurboR with a Sunrise CF IDE interface. I would like to emulate this config system in blueMSX in order to build a nice harddisk image plenty of MSX utils and games and dump it back into the real CF card and then, to the real TurboR. But I have the following questions:

  • What is the best way to move files between PC (Windows) <-> MSX hardfile?
  • Could be a problem to do this having a FAT12 filesystem?
  • How I dump a hardfile from/to CF card?

Thanks to a program pointed by mars2000you at the blueMSX forum I have been able to solve these questions. I will answer myself here in case somebody want to do the same and faces similar questions:

What is the best way to move files between PC (Windows) <-> MSX hardfile?DiskExplorer is the right program to do that.

Could be a problem to do this having a FAT12 filesystem?
With most disk image utilities I think it would be a problem. Fortunately enough, DiskExplorer is able to read images with more than one partition in them. The trick is to select "vmware plain disk" when the program asks. After that, you will be able to choose the partition you want to handle.

From there, transfering files PC <-> MSX is as easy as drag and drop.

How I dump a hardfile from/to CF card?The best is to use the DD utility (the link is the win32 version), if you use a Unix flavor, the dd program should be part of your system. With that, you can dump you whole harddisk (no matter if it is actually a CF card) into a image file ready to use with an emulator. After work with the emulator has finisihed, with the very same program is possible to dump the image file back to the harddisk/CF card. No matter if it's a set of FAT12 partitions or a single FAT16.

I think this information is also useful for openMSX :)

I've used Dubaron Disk Image because of the GUI, but I think it is a matter of taste... If you are more into scripting, then I think DD is better...

BTW last time I used DiskExplorer it corrupted my disk image, so remember to make backup of the image before using this program.
