What's important from a licensing pow is what license the code was under at the time when openMSX forked the MAME version (blueMSX forked openMSX a short while later). Perhaps wouter_ knows.
As the founder of the project I wrote some e-mails to the authors of those parts of MAME. I asked them if they were willing to dual-license their code as (L?)GPL and the original mame license. And I got an affirmative answer Smile (Otherwise we wouldn't have used the code in openMSX anyway) If I can find some time next week I'll try to look up those old e-mails.

So the code was definitely GPL (or LGPL) at the moment we included them in openMSX. But I have a hunch that they will not be so enthusiastic about relicensing the code under a limited-distribution/make-some-profit kind of scheme.

And I also have a mixed feeling about this situation with the AppStore. I really really dislike the fact that VLC got pulled but it clearly shows an incompatibility between the forced DRM of the AppStore and the GPL.

$5 for what we've worked on for the last 8 years without charging a dime and only have put money into (buying handhelds / domain / hosting / hardware?) I feel cheated out of money Tongue Rakashazi I never did this for the money but feel free to make a few $ (US)

For openMSX: To save room you could eliminate most of the romdb except for the games you bundle them with / you could eliminate most TCL scripts etc etc. Good luck and make sure you give the devs a coupon so they can download their stuff for free.

Restrictions? (I shouldn't feed the trolls though...) Anyway, all those things you mentioned are not relevant for an iPhone/Android port, muffie...

I'm pretty sure everyone here just LOVE C-BIOS! Smile

There are no restrictions in openMSX that force you to use only C-BIOS. On the contrary.

it's distributed with C-BIOS only forcing the user to "dig msx bios files" over the internet. Not to mention is not trivial to install them.
I know all about the hosting on sf.net and etc... but choosing any msx machine from a drop down list is what everyone expect.
iPhone just created an easier and intuitive UI back on it's first version. Nothing too new on the internals and the rest is history. Success = User OVERALL Experience and openMSX sux on that. Is that really hard to understand?
Just assume that openMSX is for geek-openMSX-lovers (like all of us) (I use it BTW). It is what it is: several geek restrictions and bad overall user experience.

Apple is a mess, they will not allow an emulator that runs basic or dos,why not make it available as a jail broken application? Most jailbroken ipads run miracles and applications not available elsewhere, that way you can give any programs freeware that you want without hassle.
Just my 2 cents.

It's going to be released on cydia, don't worry. But since a lot of users here don't want to jailbreak we're exploring what it takes to get an msx emu released on the app store, like the C64 did.

Ok, I'm in a typing mood, so I'll take the bait...

it's distributed with C-BIOS only forcing the user to "dig msx bios files" over the internet.

Yes, because we can not legally provide the other files. If the other emu-writers are willing to break the law and distribute those copyrighted files that aren't declared free-to-be-copied-around, then it is their responsibility. We simply will not break those laws. Be assured, when we are allowed to provide those files by the original copyright holders we will jump to the occasion.
It really is such a pity that current laws pose such restriction on user-friendliness Crying

Not to mention is not trivial to install them.
That's a piece of BS and you know it. Simply drop them all in the systemroms folder and they will be found. Heck even the names may be wrong since we use checksums to find the correct file in the pool.

I know all about the hosting on sf.net and etc... but choosing any msx machine from a drop down list is what everyone expect.

So 'dig' for the other files and use the front-end we provide...

Besides most emulator users don't even care about c-bios or any actual machine, they simply want to play the old games (like all the gamers who wanted to see the origin of Konami's Metal Gear ...)

Is that really hard to understand?
Legal restrictions and respect for copyrights , is that really so hard to understand?

If people want to break copyright law, they should be willing to put at least some effort into finding those systemroms Tongue

Muffie recently went too far with his insults and I had to block him because of severe harassment. It's sad really because I liked what the guy has done for the MSX scene.... too bad that he has, what I believe to be, some mental disorder

Ok, I don't want to be rude. But would you please keep this on topic.

I know there can be issues on forums. Definitely when people are there long enough, little irritations can grow into full fledged wars.

But it would be nice, if we could keep this topic rather clean and just put the energy in producing a msx emulator for the iPhone/Android phones which everyone can appreciate. Thanks Smile
