5000 newsposts

If you would've told the paper MSX magazines in the late 90's that thousands of news posts could be made since 2002, they probably would laugh you in the face. But here we are, arriving in one piece at MRC newspost 5000, only 6 weeks after we announced MRC account 5000 and a year after we got forum post 100.000. For the moment the can of milestones looks empty for a long time to come.

Quite a few things have changed over the years, like the quality of newsposts which has increased, and the composition of the crew which changes gradually. With the crew changing, so does the style. You may have noticed that some writers from the past aren't much active anymore, and that new writers, such as meisei developer hap, have injected some more wit and humor into their newsposts. You could say that with all these stylistic changes and crew shifts, we've more or less arrived at a kind of next generation MRC. Two changes have yet to come. The biggest one will be MRC2k9/MRC2k10, which will be a major rewrite and redesign of MRC. The other change is smaller but will still be an addition appreciated by quite some people, more on that soon.

While most of the newsposts have been made by the crew, a significant amount of news has been submitted by you. Such news submissions are vital to keep the website up to date, but are likely to be important for you as well. If ever you're working on a game, demo, magazine, website, song, map, translation or anything else: the exposure on MRC is quite considerable. Not just to regulars from our scene, but also to new people. Keep in mind that every now and then an MSX user rejoins the scene after he left it in the late 80's. Such returnees would be pleasantly surprised by all the projects that are going on! In short: keep us informed of what's on your drawing board, and we'll keep your audience informed!

With that rewrite/redesign, I hope you’ll take special care to keep existing links working! Smile

Links in newsposts you mean? Or links in the links section?

The old forum/news content will of course be transfered to the new MRC, so it's not like current things are lost.. it just looks different!

I think he means links anywhere: news, forum, reactions........

MRC has become a very precious database with not only a lot of information, it also tells the story of the MSX scene during the first 10 years of the 21st century. It should all be preserved.

That's what Grauw is saying Wink

In addition: I think it would be a good idea to put the entire site as it is now on a DVD and maybe give people the opportunity to purchase this DVD.

I mean links to the MRC from anywhere. To forum posts, news posts, the RSS feed URL…

The posts will of course stay there, but like most sites the MRC is not stand-alone, there are links pointing to various MRC articles and forum posts on the interwebs (Google, blog posts, the MAP, MRC forum posts, etc.), and it would be a shame if those stopped working.

In other words, http://www.msx.org/5000-newsposts.newspost5249.html should still point to this post after the redesign :).

If you can’t or don’t want to change the link format of the new backend, some URL rewriting rules should do the trick, as long as post IDs stay the same… I do that too, http://www.grauw.nl/blog/?entry=175 still works even though I changed the link format.

Jorito is coding it, so he's the one to comment on that formally. But I guess it's all no problem. As said, it's all about new layout and functionality and for the crew: a new CMS. Since we also link to our own newsposts in new newsposts now and then (like in this one, even!) it'd be a bit pointless to change these links.

Good to hear Smile. With a change to a different CMS, URLs often change, and sometimes people forget to also redirect the old URLs, resulting in a lot of broken links on the internet even when the actual information is still there, which would be a shame.

About mrc2k9/2k10: we'll try to divert as much of the old links to the new structure with a HTTP 301 redirect. But because of 7 years of legacy links, I can't promise 100% accuracy Smile
Still, it's one of the final things on the TODO.

Anyways, congrats on this insane amount of newsposts, and let's keep 'em coming!

Btw, unfortunately Motigo's webstats for the MRC are not active anymore and this year we were going to beat all records!

Yeah, well, we unfortunately had to remove it. Unless you prefer a Motigo counter that displays banners/ads every few views...
