Ok, after a long search I found the answer here. So, the masking doesn’t work on Toshiba VDPs.

But damn I did it again, now it’s late and I have to get up early tomorrow :). Well, at least I wrote a nice summary, I’ll put something on the MAP about it later.

The most relevant part of the post I've pointed is the way to avoid sprite cloning while having masking.
The way the vram is organized allows the use of two pages for total 1024 tiles preloaded in vram.
If you want I could extract the relevant info for MAP.

Yeah I read that bit too. If you can write some info or description, I’d be very happy to receive it. If I write it myself, it’s only combining second-hand snippets of information (unless I start experimenting too), so it’s better if you could write down your first-hand experiences Smile.

@grauw, oh you got a nice summary sheet.

The toshiba.
I read it as "the top 2 mask bits, as soon as you set one to 0, it is like both got set to 0"?
Is there still pattern versus color masking or is it "as soon as you touch anything, it is down to 1 charset"?

"On a Yamaha V9938 / V9958: Behaves like the TMS9918."

I think 9938 does like 9118. And emulators.
The extra mask bits work like a continuation of the top two color mask bits.
While on 9918 the mask goes on the pattern name.

Oh another text.
The headlines of those documents, I would like to remove the uncertainty.
"hybrid" - the word sometimes seems to be used for funny mode register setups. the topic is mask registers in screen 2.
"unofficial" - TMS manual officialy tells you will meet the sprite bug Smile 9918 9118 behaviour is known.
