In the original OCM you simply insert SD-Card with the firmware and execute the update. I've installed KdL firmware by this way.

This is the same as 1chip MSX.
Use the Terasic Blaster To update the firmware.
And update the firmware in the SD-Card.

Because the case is in preparation, it is not yet known.

I am interested to buy one as well. However, keep in mind, that you have to pay taxes (VAT and perhaps some other fees) when you buy this in Japan...

One thing I'm wondering about – the product pages say the buyer would need to load the OCM firmware by themselves. Leaving aside for a moment the question of how to do it, is there an official / de facto "vanilla" OCM firmware source? I found a number of download sources but most seem to have been modded one way or another.

Not really. There’s the firmware originally released with the 1chipMSX, however a lot of developments and improvements have been made since by people like HRA and KdL. For the 1chipMSX and Zemmix Neo I’d say KdL’s updates are the "de facto" latest firmware. Though it would be nice if this project was maintained in a nice public version control system (hint hint).
