I think the goal of John is more of asking in general to all people who spread scene software, "Why are you trying to hurt the msx scene?" instead of pointing fingers to individuals.

That was indeed exactly my intention. This is not to shame or point fingers to anyone, I was really talking in general here. Thanks, syn. Smile

I would like to thank everyone for the kind words about my work, but especially for keeping this discussion civil. It's really interesting to read all of your opinions.
Reading all of this, I think I was being way too negative about the scene. I'm sorry about that. Round of applause for everyone, and this time not sarcastically. Smile

About "watermarking" digital downloads: How hard is to hide a 3-digit number in the middle of a ROM?

Too easy.
But anyway they won't care. They are always going to find any excuse to copy the stuff. In their minds, they are heroes. I don't think we can change that.

And it can give some interesting results. In the past, Tyfoon software gave every copy of ProTracker their own ID, so in they could indeed trace illegal copies back to the person it was originally sold to.
They were quite surprised to see that the first cracked version that appeared on the BBS's in those days was the copy they sent for review to MCCM (Dutch MSX Magazine...).
Although it wasn't MCCM itself who made and distributed the crack, but their reviewer lent his review copy to someone who cracked it and put it on his BBS...

And since carts are handmade, you can watermark the ROMs before burning. Smile

And then compare multiple ROM dumps in a hex viewer and wipe the differences? I dunno, would it work like that?

At least give them trouble. Make them dump TWO carts!

Even funnier: randomly change WHERE to put the string inside the ROM, if that's simple. 30% of the ROM will look different. Smile

crc the watermark and have it not work if the crc is wrong.
