Gaming compo (Nijmegen?) - suitable games & rules

So I was thinking it would perhaps be cool to organize a gaming compo which could take place on the next Nijmegen fair.

General idea:

  • play on most common EU MSX2: NMS 8250;
  • input device either (the default) keyboard, or a popular joystick (The Arcade? (Always have been more of a kb player myself, so not really into controllers/joysticks..));
  • play the most common version of the game (when applicable);
  • depending on number of contestants, and number of games that are in the compo, a hard time-limit applies (I guess prolly around 10 minutes);
  • winner would be the one with the highest score, but it would be interesting to record some other stuff as well (see @ game descriptions below);
  • would be cool is there are peep that would like be prize sponsors. Or creative peep that could create badges (like them famous & cool Activision patches), or perhaps a cool memorial t-shirt;
  • ...;
  • of course, this could be something recurring with the Nijmegen fair ;)

Some stuff to decide about:

Input devices
Should self-brought controllers be allowed? (Of course In no circumstance this may be a modded or hacked device that gives or could give the player an unfair advantage.)

PAL vs. NTSC
Back in the day we (talking about the average Dutch/EU MSX user now) used to play most Japanese (MSX1) games @50Hz, but nowadays with the use of .roms and various loading mechanisms & emulators it's easy, and prolly general practice to play them @6oHz. (Any examples of Jap. (MSX1) games that were specifically designed for, or could adapt themselves to PAL?)

So, what do you think about the idea, and what about cool/suitable games for a gaming (hi-score) competition? Some games I was thinking about:

  1. Galaga
    I bet a skilled Galaga player can last a while? (Anyone (easily) reaching, say, stage 25 here?)

    Rules: time-limit + play until first death (not including losing your 2nd, docked fighter).
    Recorded: score, remaining lives, stage reached, hit-miss ratio (the game nicely provides this on game over).

  2. Beamrider
    Start at Level 3 (= sector 10)

    Still can last a long time, so most probably one will hit the time limit. Or otherwise also set death limit to 1 or 2.
    Recorded: score, remaining lives, sector reached.

    (European game, so this one @ 50Hz.)

  3. Pyramid Warp
    I figure in this one luck plays a role as well (so interesting title in that regard alone).
    I wonder what one's longest Pyramid Warp session has been here? :)

Perhaps something like Athletic Land or Magical Tree could be nice compo games as well.

I now realize there could also be compo where people are actually dueling in a split-screen (or similar) game... and compo could take place in a knockout format (where one places oneself for quarter finals, etc.)..
But..: I'm not a big fan of games like Hyper Sports (kb/joystick killers.. :p) myself. And Quarth may be a game someone might suggest, but IMO that one is really not that interesting / overrated (I always used to wonder if I was missing something there..? :P ;))

I love love love Quarth Smile. Once at the Bussum fair we played it with a PS2 DDR dance mat controller! Big smile

But, nice idea!

Been watching a lot og Games Done Quick vids lately... there's also some head-to-head races there, if you can find two people who speedrun a certain MSX game, might also be fun to do one of those sometime.

Knightmare can be score-wise intersting (there are different ways to optimize the scoring). Time limit is required too I guess.

@Louthrax: yeah, thought about that one as well. And perhaps disallow use of shield (like you mentioned in that 'achievements' thread Wink)

We could also hack some games, like making it actually impossible to get the shield in Knightmare, or a Galaga starting stage selector, or actually injecting a timer? Smile

@Grauw: I don't see any tactics in Quarth? It's just filling up stuff, and quite some times there doesn't seem to be a particular smart way to do it, so I'm missing some tactical element there?
Or perhaps it's only fun with 2 people, nagging each other.. (it's been a while I did a 2p Quarth game..)

Thinking a bit more about that: just high-score at the end of level 1 or 2 could be enough (hint: taking the shield could be a disadvantage for scoring). Way to win here will more be on the strategy than on pure shmup skills Smile We should just forbid taking advantage of the extra-life on level 1 (you can go for an infinite high-score with this).

Absolutely. Smile The whole idea (for advanced play) is to actually make 'combos'. This not only saves time and yields more points, but also gives you an edge if competing against another player.

The game has two types of 2P modes; one cooperative, the other competitive.

A pretty good idea! Unfornatualy I´m too bad for a contest but I will enjoy this among lot of other visitors. Hope the fair will not be before 20th january, so I can join.
BTW H.E.R.O would be nice, too. Because you have this timer, which points the fastest player. Like Knightmare maybe only Level 5 to 10 or 10 to 15.

If you want some good laughs, make an Armwrestling tournament with arcade-like joysticks Wink

I was thinking about January 27.... But I haven't arranged things yet. So people can still influence me Smile

What I like about Quarth is to make the biggest combos I can before the blocks reach the bottom Smile. Or if it turns out I can’t make it, to rush and try to recover.
