It seems that, since you're jiggling/forcing the connector to get contact, more and more of the already fragile soldering points of the connector are cracking.

I would advice to remove all of the old solder from the joystick connector, clean everything up and then solder it back in place with new tin.

Since you'll be opening the machine anyway, maybe it's a good idea to remove the old solder from all external connectors and re-solder them back with new tin. I had to do this on my Sony HB-F1XDJ once the solder started cracking everywhere.

Don't just add new tin to the older. The alloy doesn't amalgamate very well and it ends up cracking in short time again.

All right. That's good to know. Thanks!

I'm in the process of moving to Tokyo proper (amidst the coronavirus panic -- bad timing, it seems!), and I have a friend who lives within a few train rides of my new place who's done a LOT of soldering projects on game systems and computers, and has offered to help teach me. AND I managed to find a duffel bag that's the perfect size for my WX, and lined it on the bottom with a hard plastic base, so I can easily transport my MSX to and fro now. So I do believe I'll be paying my friend a visit after I've settled in from the move, and she'll hopefully be able to help me get this thing fixed up -- and help familiarize me with soldering for my own future reference, too!
