Hi all! We have a flappy bird clome contest this month in our FB retro coding group. I don't know if I'll finish it in time (deadline is october, 4th and I've started coding only few days ago) but I'm having fun messing around with horizontal scrolling.
Using the same routine (but different tiles) I have two results. The first is a plain 2 pixel horizontal scrolling, the second is a (fake?) colors/tiles interpolation:

Both videos are recorded on openMSX with -triplesize option, so you can set YouTube quality on 720p50 and have the right framerate. Let me know your thoughts

I personally like the first on the most. It's easier on the eyes. The 2nd one seems to cause some flckering.
WIll you still be able to add some background somehow?

BTW, are you familiar with this MSX Flappy clone: Flappy for MSX by SCS (Play online)

Didn't know this clone (I saw only some videos of Giovanni Nunes' one).
Yes, I'm able to add some background. Because the scrolling routine still updates all the nametable entries I simply have to draw 4 tiles for each tile of the background. I can draw a tiles' serie only for the bottom as the game you linked does. To achieve a dual layer scrolling I have to rewrite the whole routine, to be able to update each layer separately: first the background layer and then the foreground layer (maybe a simple pipes paste).

Actually the second attempt was to try to overcome the 2 colors limit on 8x1 pixel line by tricking eyes (so flickering is a collateral effect)

Indeed, very nice version. I see no problems to do the same, but I'm trying to achieve something new Wink our monthly challenges are pretexts to start experimenting and having fun with coding. All languages are admitted and there are no prizes. Before these 2 attempts I've shown 3 attempts/proof of concept in msx basic too.

Hahahahaha !!! ... I like the idea of the farty pig Smile
Very nice. There should an "oink, oink" somewhere in the sound effects Wink
