The 1986 MSX2 title 大戦略 (Daisenryaku), known as Great Strategy, has been translated from Japanese to English by MSX Translations. A great treat, for a great game.

From the group MSX Translations, we have seen a great bunch of translated MSX games in the past. Games like Ganbare Goemon, Romancia, Hinotori, Mr. Ghost and Puyo Puyo to name a few. Now, Daisenryaku/ Great Strategy is added to that list of translations.

The strategy game Daisenryaku/Great Strategy, developed by System Soft, was originally released by Microcabin in 1986 on a MegaRom cartridge.

Based on the texts in the manual(s) and other Japanese versions, the texts have been improved so they are more readily understood. And anyone who has played the game knows that playing against a computer opponent in this game, means you can get some coffee when it's its turn. With the turbo mode implemented this game feels fresh and cuts down on your caffeine addiction. The Map Selection is also translated. And for your added enjoyment, levels from the PC8801 version have been converted to this MSX version.

Other features for this translation are:

  • Translated title screen and an alternate title screen
  • Fix for stack overflows this game suffers from (there also is a stand alone fix)
  • Retranslated unit names and their weaponry
  • Other minor fixes

There's no more excuse, any one can finally enjoy this nice piece of MSX software.

While we're on the subject, MSX translations has some more great projects in its queue. They are currently finishing translations of Androgynous, Last Armageddon, and La Valeur.

Nice.

I had to patch the files from disk, the disk based patches did not work. @gdx: There are 2 file based patches just to fix the stack issues for the Japanese version, check the text file.

Excellent news. Thank you. Will have to try this game out.

Really looking forward to Last Armageddon, an RPG I tried playing multiple times in the past.

I don't know how to contact these guys, but I found a little bug. When you produce a unit and use "Move" on it, a message is displayed it can't be moved (I guess). But the message disappears to fast, you can't read it.

The speed of the enemy is a huge improvement!

@msx.org: wow nice picture to accompany the post! Very much appreciated!

Thanks TheKid for the report, I will see if that could be rectified...

That was already the case in the original version if you launched the game in R800 mode ("active wait" base on CPU time and not on VDP I guess...). The message says that you can't move that unit (because it has already been moved or just produced).

I used to play Daisenryaku II Campaign Version (a.k.a. Great Strategy II) in the past but never played this one before. Can someone tell me a bit about the differences and similarities between the two games?

@Manuel: Daisenryaku 1 is a simpler predecessor to Daisenryaku II.

Similarities: you can play pvp, pvc, or cvc. Hex based gameplay, strategy, multiple units.

Differences, Daisenryaku 2 is much more complex, more units, bigger maps, has campaigns, has units on the water, the customer kit that allows more options (even fighting with RPG characters etc, unit editors etc) is not translated yet. Daisenryaku can only have 2 parties at the same time. Daisenryaku 2 has 4 possible simultaneous players with units from different countries.

Daisenryaku is a fairly easy game to get into it. Even Super Daisenryaku already grows exponentially in complexity. Which can be nice, but Daisenryaku could be a nice way to get into these games.

Maps are not interchangable: Daisenryaku is 40x40, Super Daisenryaku and Masters of Monsters are 64x64 and can be converted to one another. I don't know what the dimensions of Daisenryaku 2 are and if they can be converted (easily).

And let’s not forget, daisenryaku 2 has awesome fm pac music!
@louthrax: I wasn’t aware the orignal had the same problem, thanks.
@vampire: yes, I do Smile but I was sure posting it here, would get the message accros to the right people aswell (and it did).

But two thumbs up for the translators, it’s realy cool they change in-game graphics so non japanese speaking people can understand what it’s all about.

Minor issue but it could be a fine additionnal polishing if the patch was fixing that (different delays based on the turbo modes, which might be tricky because there are different turbo frequencies if I'm not mistaken, or better using a VDP-timer based counter...).

With these games I expect game play similar to Civilization, but that's apparently not true.

I'll have to study the translated manual again (Takamichi once translated the Daisenryaku II manual, and I actually made it a PDF file in 1997, using LaTeX...)

OK, so you should just try to produce units and move them to the enemies to attack them and in the end conquer their capital cities. You cannot build or conquer other cities to increase your production capacity.
I shouldn't expect Civilization from this game, that's clear Smile Still, it's fun.

And wow, would it be cool to have Civiliziation for MSX... I have the feeling this game engine could already almost support it.

you are wrong you can conquer neutral cities and airports as well and in DS2 also harbours. And you can conquer individual cities. Especially in DS2 you can do tons of things.

And yes it has far more units and strats, but no building of bases (maybe in ds2) as far as i know. And it has no fog. But really it has tons of possibilities. Almost makes me want to translate customer kit just to show...

How to conquer these then? The manual of Daisenryaku 2 only mentions that you can build units in the area around the capital. When moving into neutral cities I didn't find a way to conquer them.

I think some units are able to conquer them and some aren't. That appears to be the case in Daisenryaku 1 and I think that will be the case in 2 as well. I think planes and helis can't (and maybe can on an airport). I haven't played Daisenryaku 2 in a long while, but I advise you to have a look at the computer play itself. You will then see more what the game is capable of.
