this appear to me impressive considering that this machine has 4Mhz z80! and 48K or VRAM to move.

Is there any PC88 expert that can explain where is the trick? it does appear to scroll by brute force the display.....
I'm wondering why on a msx1/2 we are unable to achieve this with the same CPU the more advanced VDP and hw sprites...!

That's not a PC88 series machine, it's the last of the PC-8001 series, the PC-8001 mkIISR with dedicated graphics (dual planes, half the resolution of a PC88 so less VRAM to move and a high speed blitter) and sound hardware.

Even on a humble 9918 you can have dual planes (parallax effect), if scrolling by tiles (8x8).

There are a few games that use this technique, like this one:

Probably the Japanese Wikipedia article is the best source out there. Despite being pretty powerful, it was a short lived machine and there's not too much info in the web.

Very nice version, I would love that Namco should produced a MSX2 version of Pac Land, was one of my favourites coin ops. We only had the Spectrum port for MSX1, that in any case has a very nice music and not so bad graphics considering they are monochrome.

So nice! Unfortunately according to the description, it's only a test with the main character and background, so no real project to be finished.

I don't find the scrolling to be superior to various games on the MSX1/2. Am I missing something?

that's interesting, the scrolling is somewhat faster than i've suspected. it does appear to be screen 5.
how they did this scroll routine.
