Hello all,

Anyone knows where can I find some .BAS files with music made using just "PLAY" and "SOUND" basic commands? I still remember back in the 80's listening to some U2 songs like that...

Best Regards,

There are some compilations on Books and Magazines.
In the past I found some of them for sale, Liberdade on São Paulo had them.

It is possible to convert some songs from QBASIC to MSX-BASIC. The PLAY is very similar on both dialects of Microsoft BASIC.

There are plenty of music for sale or download on the NET. Maybe you could convert some SMF, MIDI files are easier to find.

The official MSX-MAGAZINE had lists for The Goonies and other Konami games. Most of the music needed the Optional Yamaha music chip.

The music from other magazines or books sometimes used only the PSG ...

Yeah. Near Dark once published a disk named "Illusions" which contained MIDI files of Illusion City, sort of half software wise, half manually converted to OPL4.

And there should be more ways to do this.

Convert MIDI files to MSX Play? is that possible?

You don't need to convert anything, you only need a program to play them on a MIDI device. Some of the musics on the MSX-FAN disk magazine were standard files. (double clicking them on Microsoft Windows play the music)

STANDARD could means that any machine that complies to the standard would be able to correct handle the tasks.

Now without a MIDI interface, external hardware and software ...
The problem is that most persons only have one "FM" chip and there is only 9 voices. Some musics would need 16 or 18 voices! It would be possible to use additional MSX hardware to play them. There was even a MSX-BASIC list that would convert MSX-MIDI BASIC lists to MSX-MUSIC BASIC lists but this only worked for BASIC lists not MIDI files. It would be possible to code some software that would make the conversion, but the sound would be different.

Well, I forgot to tell that my objective is to "use" some songs on MSX1 Basic programs, so, all I need is some .BAS programs with PLAYS on them...

LOL!

The MSX-MUSIC is compatible with MSX1, but you would need something like the FM Sound Stereo cartridge (output is 2xRCA audio). The "Music-Module" is compatible with basic MSX either.

In the case of the basic PLAYS, it would be easier to convert the lists from IBM Personal Computers. Since the Personal Computer Speaker is somehow limited, the musics should be easier to convert. There is a nice program that convert some musics to QBASIC and others. I found the program on the PB/Xtra III Programmer's Reference Collection on CD-ROM.
This is for PC, but some of the stuff is similar to the stuff on the Microsoft variants of the BASIC. PowerBASIC made some nice compilers.

I will see the program and post a reply to you. There are some musics from old movies that could be played on MSX1 when converted.

Name of the program is Melody Master V2.5.
You can 'save' and convert some musics for use with BASIC, PASCAL or C.

Sure that the legality of the converted music could be controversy, but the software is nice to look at!

I later edited the ASCII source code (the PLAY ) to work with MSX-BASIC. If you wanted to look for some software like this, I can list what you need to manually cut-off from the lists to play them on MSX personal computers ...
