Hi,

First time MSX user here with an OCM I just got from ebay. I'm wanting to make sure I have the best firmware loaded into it for the most compatibility and am a bit confused as to where to go to get it and which is the latest. Also, I don't read Japanese so a lot of the sites I've found are difficult for me to understand.

Searching here, I have found 2 different people releasing firmware for it (Kdl and HRA!). Which of these two packages would be best for a new user of the MSX?

Is there any way to figure out which firmware I have loaded in my OCM before I try to flash it?

Is the pldload program the only thing I need to use to flash it? Are there any parameters I should know about for when I do try to flash it? Which of the files in the firmware package do I flash (I believe it's something like emsx_top.pld)?

Thanks in advance!

KdL released pre-built and packaged versions of HRA's releases. Which is better probably depends on how cutting edge you want your firmware.

You can pldsave your current firmware and save it to disk. But if you never changed it, it is a version that is older than even the one delivered on the CD.

Yes, if you have pld files, all you need to do is "pldload file.pld", wait and power cycle when it's done.

From the little bit I've seen, it did look like the Kdl releases were the ones to go with. I'm looking for more stability that anything at this point. I don't want to confuse myself any more than I have to!

I'll go ahead and make a backup copy of my firmware, just in case. I assume it's just a matter of reflashing to go down in versions?

So far so good! I upgraded to the 2.2b release and it seems to still work ok. I'm having a bit of an issue trying to boot up a couple of .dsk files I have. One in particular (Parodius) is giving me a memory issue I can't seem to get rid of. I've enabled the slot 2 SCC options and used the map.com before mounting the image, but every time I boot with the image loaded it gives me an out of memory error on what looks like a loading screen for the game. I don't think this is firmware related as it was doing it on the original firmware as well, but is there possibly a setting I need to change to get stuff like this working?

Parodius on disk probably means a bad crack. Get better software. Tongue

Using PLDSAVE.COM there is the possibility to have a corrupted PLD backup file.
If you don't have a Byteblaster II, or compatible cable, please you don't restore any PLD backup file maked by PLDSAVE.COM !!
A tested PLD file or the original one are the only secure files to load with PLDLOAD.COM Wink

Thanks for the heads up! I have deleted the backup copy I made and will not restore from it.

You were exactly right! I found a rom version and it boots perfectly! Thanks! I'm enjoying it a lot more than when I played it on my PSP! Cool
