Marat Fayzullin has just released a new edition of fMSX, the mother of many different MSX emulators. New in this version:

  • Added transparent support for GZIPped disk images as disks. You can now pass .GZ file names in -diska/-diskb command line options
  • Added transparent support for directories as disks. You can now pass directory names in -diska/-diskb command line options. Changes to such disks will not be saved for safety reasons
  • Added DirectDraw-based full screen mode to fMSX-Windows. Press [ALT]+[ENTER] to switch in and out of the full screen mode. Use it with caution, as DirectDraw is notoriously unstable
  • Added a full-fledged debugger to fMSX-Windows. Press [F11] to invoke the debugger
  • Fixed several bugs in MIDI implementations that made some games silent when logging soundtrack or using MIDI output in fMSX-Windows
  • Better adapted fMSX-MSDOS to 320x200 VGA screen
  • "Sync to VBlanks" option is now default in fMSX-MSDOS

People who registered their fMSX emulator for Windows will soon receive their new version by e-mail. This newer version is very likely to gain a higher score in the MSX Emulator Comparison and will be put to the test as soon as it arrives at MRC HQ.

I didn't miss it. I typed a 'p' instead! Tongue Vincent, did you also plan a new fMSX-SDL?

Don't think so. This is a good moment to give it a rest. With both openMSX and bluemsx I think there is little to add with fMSX-SDL.

Well, you could give me a heck of a lot to do with the Emu Comparison Tongue

On a more serious note: I think fMSX-SDL is more suitable for low-spec computers than blue and openMSX (although I don't have a lowspec computer to actually test this), while it has a lot more to offer than fMSX stand-alone.... So I think quite some people would like to see an fMSX-SDL update.

Maybe we could do a "My PC has a" 1) 386 processor 2) 486 processor 3) dual core opteron poll. We could then use the results to let Snout test the emu's on the most used computer specs. Got a few weeks Snout? Tongue

I'd rather watch an entire episode of Tele-addicts whilst being tied to a chair with tape over my mouth so that I had to swallow my own vomit. (*). Does that answer your question, Sander?

Debugger good Smile.

Tho’ I don’t understand the .gz support... the format is hardly used on Windows machines...

Snout: Will you also run your test on non-Windows/x86 systems? Just to add a little bit more work Smile

I plan to add Linux emus to the comparison one day, but don't think DOS, FreeBSD, OS-X or Symbian OS are to be added.... Smile

New fMSX v.3... Will this eventually lead to a new MSXPlayer?

snout: but maybe you can add a portability note to all emulators. fMSX is very portable, but also openMSX is, of course Smile

Low-spec computers should include PDAs also. I believe fmsx is the more suitable emulator for a PalmOS-5 (arm) port. Zire-71 has 144MHz, and I remember playing fMSX-DOS when I had a Pentium-100MHz...

Currently there are lots of emulators for PalmOS-5, including Apple ][, ZX-Spectrum, GBC and even Atari-ST. Only MSX is left... There are no msxzer with PalmOS5/ARM programming knowlege amongst us?

Marat had an intention to make his own port for PalmOS, and he even started investigating the subject, but one day he stopped, I don't know why.
