I am a native French speaker and I can guarantee you that 'pachyderme' is not used in the common language, but only in scientific texts and in the very ironic expression 'marcher comme un pachyderme" (=walk like a pachyderm). But even in this case, most people will simply say "marcher comme un éléphant"(=walk like an elephant).

As many words are common between French and English (due to the long wars between these countries), I can presume without risk of error that the use of "pachyderm" in English is similar to the use of "pachyderme" in French, what means therefore that 'pachyderm' is not part of the common language used by most people.
