Hello,

this question has been asked many times before but I am still going to ask it again: How to play MSX ROMS on my real MSX system? I have seen some answers but they don't help me further as I don't understand them. It seems I can connect the tape recorder to the PC and burn ROMS to a floppy or something.
Anyway, I would really like to play some more games on the MSX so I would really apprieciate if someone could tell me step by step how to get ROMS working on the system. Yes I am very new to this. Sadly enough I can't go to the store next door and buy a new MSX game.

My MSX system specs:
SONY HIT BIT system
MSX version 1.0
Working tape recorder (tested it with some of my original MSX tapes)
Floppy Disk Drive
And a TOSHIBA Music system with an keyboard from 1985 to play with on the MSX (not necessary for you to know but the MSX keyboard is really fun Smile )

so again:
1. a) you can play ROMs that are cracked. You can load them from disk (or tape). Only ROMs of 32kB and smaller will work.
b) use a ROM loader (works only for 8-32kB ROMs (and perhaps some 48k ones)) like ODO (will not work for all games tho)
2. use a MegaFlashROM SCC/SCC+/SCC+SD for larger ROMs or for playing ROMs directly without need of a cracked version. Works with almost all ROM games.
3. Waver like solutions which you mentioned (play sound from PC to your MSX), but I don't have experience with them

Tell me what you don't understand. Also about the other answers.

Advice: get an MSX2 with at least 128kB RAM and a built in disk drive.

What floppy drive do you have now?
Which HitBit? HB-75P for instance...?

Yes it is a SONY HIT BIT HB-75P system. I have adittional RAM cartridges.
The floppy disk drive is a SONY HBD-50.

1. a) Playing cracked ROMS by loading them on a disk or tape means burning them to the disk or tape right? I think to burn it onto a tape I must convert it to another file format.
b) I have read about those ROM loaders, if I'm not mistaken I should burn the loader and a ROM to a floppy and use that with some BASIC code to play via the floppy disk drive.
2) I have just searched for a MegaFlashRom on Google, it seems to be a cartridge. Just getting ROMS on the floppy and play them using this thing right?
3) Yet I don't know how to connect the taper to the PC so that the PC can load ROMS or sound to the MSX. Or anything else that might be necessary for this option.

I did found a youtube video that hopefully explains how to load MSX games from WAV files using your computer, as the title says. Perhaps that will give me enough information to do it myself.

Thanks for the replies, yet buying another MSX system actually is not my options list, I still see high prices for used MSX systems; actually too high for me to buy. (Not that I don't have the money, just that I don't want to spend that much on systems like this as I already have one.)

To be clear: I see some ROMS in .DSK file format and ROMloaders in .COM format. I think there is a normal .ROM file format too. Any need to convert anything before putting stuff onto a floppy?

Thanks for all the help, I really apprieciate what you guys are doing.

Okay so I just watched the youtube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TkkepHtXY0w
It gave a clear description on how to load WAV files from the computer. My SONY HIT BIT system is also MSX1 and I have the same cable as him except his yellow colour piece is white for my cable. I think this could work. Would be amazing.

I'll let you guys know. Of course other options or additional information is still very welcome.

If you have an Android device you can use an app called Tapdancer to convert and play CAS files directly to your MSX.

I have an Android device. I'm definitely going to try that out. Way easier than converting to WAV and perhaps also faster.

Anyway, I downloaded a .cas file with the game Donkey Kong from this site: http://www.msxarchive.nl/pub/msx/games/tape_cas_images/. Converted it to WAV with Castools (Google it and it is easy to find). Be sure to select the 2400 baud option when converting the CAS file. I connected the taper to the PC with the white cable of my three cables. The game did apperently not load when having the other two cables still in the recorder, so I left them out. Than I entered LOAD"CAS:",R in the MSX basic; started the WAV on my computer and the crackling turned into my favourite arcade game on my REAL MSX system.

To make a long story short: Option 3 of Manuel's options works perfectly for me. And Manuel, this above is what we call a step by step tutorial.

OK, but they're not really useful. Which ones do you have exactly?

OK, that's a single sided disk drive. Do you have any device (like a PC with disk drive) to write files on the floppies that go into this drive?

Interesting wording "burning" to disk or tape... Never seen that before. We call it just 'copy to disk' or 'write to disk' or 'save to tape' or something.

Anyway, as they are cracked, they are already in another format and loadable from disk/tape.

But of course you will have to be able to write them to disk, see my question above at the disk drive.

You copy the loader program to the disk (e.g. ODO.COM) and in this case also MSX-DOS (MSXDOS.SYS and COMMAND.COM) and of course the ROM image. Then you can boot the MSX into MSX-DOS by starting it with this floppy disk and then run the loader: ODO MYGAME.ROM

Right.

An MSX2 shouldn't cost more than 25 euros or so. But it depends on where you live Smile

See above. But if something is a DSK, it's a floppy disk image, not a ROM anymore. So apparently it was cracked. For the rest, I think I already explained.

I know what it is and also how much time it takes to create one. I don't have that time, so I do my best to help you in the time I have.

You can request them online and get them by mail Smile

1. SONY EXPANSION MEMORY CARTRIDGE 16K BYTES.
2. I have an old Windows 98 computer with an in built floppy disk drive but I don't know if it still works. If it does not I can consider buying an external floppy drive for my newer PC.

Now I started wondering: I have converted those .cas files to wave sound using castools, what if I burn them to a CD and use my CD player to burn the files from the CD to a casette and use that cassette in the MSX. Would that work?

Anyway, thanks again for replying. I'm gonna take a look at your links, MsxKun.

OK, that memory expansion is a funny collectors item, but useless for any games. Mostly because you have a 64kB MSX, and MSX1 games don't use more than that.

The old computer is a good option. As you have a single sided floppy drive for the MSX, make sure you can write single sided disks. I guess Windows 98 can handle that, but I doubt newer Windows systems can.

Why not use the sound from the computer or the CD player directly? No need to put it on a real cassette tape.
