I have a Japanese Sony HB-F1XV MSX2+ and an OSSC unit. The HB-F1XV has the two different output options as seen in the attached picture. Could anyone help me finding out what kind of cable/converter is needed to get it connected to the OSSC? I got a cable for the black-audio/yellow-video output that has black/red/white cinch on the other side, but the OSSC doesn't have such an input.

The OSSC only accepts scart from those inputs, you need a RGB to scart cable.

Even though the OSSC can also take composite video (yellow), you absolutely want to use the RGB output, the quality is many times superior. In either case you need to have a SCART adapter cable.

The pinout and wiring of DIN8 RGB to SCART is described on this wiki page.

If you can’t make one yourself, there’s several shops which sell these, e.g. RetroGamingCables. Maybe there’s other shops which sell them for cheaper (’cause compared to DIY cost 30 pounds is quite steep, but maybe the shielding it boasts about reduces audio hum, idk), but do make sure you got the right cable for the machine since as you can see on the wiki link above not all RGB ports are the same.

Hey, thanks! I'll order that RGB SCART cable right away.

Just to make sure though... I've read somewhere that Japanese and European SCART are different. Do I have to pay attention to that? I've seen EuroSCART/JP21 adapters.

You have to get a Euro SCART cable, that is what OSSC expects as input! This one should do just fine.

One additional question... I would like to pair it with a 4:3 17" LCD screen. They are available in 1024x768, 1280x1024 or 1280x960. Which one do you think would give me the best results?

Best is most probably 1280x1024. (1280x960 has 16:9 aspect ratio, so that is the worst IMO)

Most scan converter lose frames (or the offset increases) when the resolution increases.

Of those resolutions you mention 1280x960 sounds like the best because 960 is a multiple of 240p so it’s an exact match with the OSSC 4x mode.

Probably best to ask that question on the OSSC forums though, a lot more users there who might have some advice I presume. I myself use the OSSC with a Dell 16:9 monitor which accepts most resolutions, but I have heard not all monitors are equally tolerant.

@NYYRIKKI 1280x960 is 4:3. 1280x1024 in the contrary is 5:4, so that’s not a good choice.

@gdx OSSC has no frame buffer so it can’t lose frames.
