Hi
I'm planning to take the challenge and build my own Carnivore 2 and would like to know if anybody has already done it, what were the problems they had when they did it.
I already build a multicontroller, so have Quartus installed and a usb blaster, I guess the process will be the same, or do I need a newer version to program this FPGA?
I guess I can program the serial EPROMS wiht my mini-pro?
I am also struggling to find some of the part: most of them can be found on utsource.net, but haven't been able to get the M93C46MN1 EEPROM, there are similar chips, but on the BOM states: "must support 8–bit mode!". Can somebody suggest any other chips that will work?
Also struggling to get the clock oscilator ( SG-310, 50 MHz). Any idea where I can get it at areasonable price? The only place I could find it was Mouser, but will have to pay postage for just 1 item!.
Will this one from utsource work: YSO110TR 50MHZ ?

Thanks

Maybe I asked the wrong questions!
I figured myself the answers, as the EEPROM can be found just using 93C46, also the quarz is just a standard smd 4 pin chip ( at 50 mhz)
I have two new questions:
On the board and BOM there are two transistors ( T1 and T1) that are Optional, what are they for?
Alo, I'm trying to get the sound connector ST-222, but can't find it anywhere!
Can somebody point me in the right direction?

Thanks

AliExpress offers those connectors if you input "audio socket 3.5mm", for example:

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/32694891007.html
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005001453336251.html

T1 and T2 were supposed to enable 12v fast mode for writing into FlashROM, but we decided not to support this feature in the firmware.

If you never soldered Altera chips with flexible pins and tiny spacing between them, prepare to fix a lot of solder blobs. :) It takes some time to get the chip properly soldered. My first chip took 1 hour to solder. Then I could do it within 15 minutes. Correct position of the chip on the board before soldering is very important. All pins should be straight and have equal distance between them.

If you need a case and you don't want to cut the holes yourself, you can buy one here:

Alexey
Thanks for the tips
To be honest, I think it will be easier than soldering the multicontroller with the sockets: there are moe pins but you are not constrained by the plastic
I will let you know when I'm done!

When I have my GR8BIT v1.1 finished, I will give this a try as well. The carnivore 2 is still on my wanted list Big smile

Raymond
I was thinking in building that board, but I'm not sure of the benefits
Do you get a full tcp/ip stack?
thanks

If you need CF slots for your Carnivore2, you can contact our Russian distributor - he just got 500 pieces in stock.

I wrote an article (still not fully complete) where I give some tips to build the cartridge. There is a table there with a few UTSource and AliExpress links for the items you need to build the cartridge. Hope it helps. http://www.theretrohacker.com/2022/08/22/building-the-rbsc-carnivore2/

Are the STL files for the cartridge available, I can't seem to locate them.
