Thanks for the link Siddy.

The tinned contacts really damage connector pins, and not just over a long period. We can never say it enough. If it is a prototype, this is only concerned the developer but if it's for sale i consider it a scam. Those who know and say nothing are accomplices.

Beveled edges does sound like a good idea to me, but it shouldn’t be blown out of proportion.

This is not just a simple good idea, it is a thing absoutely necessary as it can flatten the connector pins towards the bottom. I've seen this happen before.

I'm unaware about that. Is there any Wiki link to read to understand this damage process? I'd like to know more (have some cartridges with tinned contacts, so worried now)

Tinned contacts have 3 defaults:

  • Tin whiskers formation that can cause short circuits.
  • The slot contacts can cling because tin is too soft and the surface not smooth enough.
  • Tin dries with time. The slot contacts can cling in crackle.

IMHO for home use these 3 aren't really a big deal. What do you mean by "cling"?

@siddy6581: Don't know if it's a photo issue, but in the 3rd photo:
Pic4

The CF contacts seems to be green (copper sulfate). If you don't clean them, they will corrode.

Any recommendations on how I can clean them the best way? I just gave them a bit och scrub with prf tcc contact cleaner (picture is taken before the clean up).

Hi gfx. Looking at the connectors of my cartridge I suspect it must be some HASL-finishing on the connectors. Should I avoid using this cartridge? What short circuit could be cause in the cartridge slot of the MSX? And I also would like to know what you mean by contacts cling Smile

Yes. In this new photo it doesn't seem that bad, maybe it was just a reflection in the previous photo.
Guess a scrub with IPA or contact cleaner will do.

Speaking of Carnivore2 standards. I'm not an expert on the subject but looking at 8bits4ever's cartridge, it does not looked beveled. Is this something you have considered or maybe it's not much of a subject within MSX scene. It was recently discussed in length by RetroRGB when he discovered that some releases of Demons of Asteborg (Sega Genesis/Mega Drive) came with a semi-beveled cartridge:

If you care for beveled edges you can always DIY it :P.

Haha, something tells me it's a lot harder than it looks. But could be interesting to test on a repro-cartridge or something less valuable.
