I am designing a portable MSX / MSX2 and I need to know some things:
What are the indispensable components?
How much RAM memory do you need for all games?
Which BIOS can I use?

Surprised nobody replied yet!
But you are risking yourself to get a lot of crazy impossible requests! Tongue

I think... indispensable.. a real Z80 and a real V9938 (if you stick to MSX2 as max.) and a real PSG (OPLL/SCC would be a plus). For games only you can pass with little RAM, most of the ROMS can work with only 8kb of RAM. But then... if you want to use Basic, MSX-DOS and stuffs, 512ks as minimum. Not much else uses more than that.
Some SD (maybe USB!?) reader, some flashrom, 2 joystick ports, 2 cartridge slots... I can live without casette port, printer and diskdrive (having an SD...) but some network interface (Obsonet, Wifi) could be great.
And of course.... a portable CRT screen! Tongue

About BIOS... I'm not fan of CBIOS, it gives many troubles.

What MsxKun saysWink I prefer LCD though (for portability). I would prefer to use e.g. original Japanese HB-F5 BIOS (without the firmware obviously) and a Japanese keyboard layout. 128kB RAM is minimal but going to 512kB would be nice.FM would be nice to add (chips are cheap and available. Will it have a cartridge slot?

Thanks for the replies, my idea is to build a steam deck style console, so I only need the bare minimum for games, no joystick ports, no printer ports etc ...
D-pad
2 fire button
7 inch monitor
1 cartridge holder

Can you indicate which troubles, please? There aren't many known issues with it.

better should be a v9958. it has horizontal scroll regs + vdp wait useful with fast z80

Ah you mean a handheld console then. A Zemmix portable, not an MSX. Complicated for some stuff to use. You gonna need a virtual keyboard for ... F1 to pause konamis, like press CTRL at boot, like using DSKs, many things missing for some games like pressing NORIKO keys in Penguin Adventure to get some continues... Cartridge slot, SD slot, headphones and plenty of battery.

I gave up about it long ago. If I try to get my memory back, not even sure if it was too picky about vblank or too relaxed.
Or with other stuff, but quite sure it was GFX related in some way. I mean, that can happen by the emulator itself, but I'm willing to remember that the same configuration, only changing the BIOS, was working unproperly on CBIOS and fine on a normal BIOS.
What test I did, impossible to remember now. And if since then the CBIOS had revisions (probably I guess), no idea about them.
Just back then I had the feeling about emulator = untrusty behaviour respect real MSX, and CBIOS added another layer of untrustiness over it. So I ran away, as anyway I don't have the need to use it.

Yes but then it's MSX2+ basically, and he said MSX1/MSX2.

MsxKun: well it's a bit nasty to state (as a fact) that "it gives many troubles" without even having reporting one (at least, as far as I know); and worse not being able to mention even one concrete issue. We have once run C-BIOS on a Philips NMS 8245, and it worked fine, as far as I remember. There used to be once an issue with too fast VDP access. Perhaps that's what you think about. But that was fixed in 2014 or so.

the necessary components are:
Z80
V9938 / V9958
64K RAM - 128K VRAM (Is 64K just enough for gaming?)
PSG (AY-3-8910)
ROM (with C-BIOS)
D8255 (for controls)

do I forget something?
