Hello,

I was wondering about the MSX Metal Gear available in Metal Gear 3 (PS2). Does anyone knows if it is a remake or is it the real msx game (with some patches and translated to english) being emulated on PS2? If it is the real MSX game, maybe we could find a way to extract it and play using our MSX machines... (Of course, I mean only those people that bought the original game). Smile

I'm pretty sure they're ports.
The games are upscaled (and filtered) to a higher resolution, so they can display better quality fonts (and for the MGS3 menu overlay when you pause/save). The sound effects in Metal Gear 1 are sometimes different, with a few SCC sounds in there, in Metal Gear 2 the music sounds just as good as a real SCC which makes me believe the sound was recorded rather than emulated.
There were also changes in the graphics (character portraits, and items).
The MSX2 boot up logo is a nice touch, but it's an upscaled 256x212 picture (rough edges, whereas it's a higer res. on a real MSX2), probably just added in for nostalgia.
Metal Gear 2 also runs a lot faster.

Well, that's too bad, but its something we should be expecting already... After all, I don't think Konami still have the source code of their MSX games anymore or people that knows how to code msx games (in order to do the patches to the original game and emulate it)... Sad

In an MGS4 trailer, I saw Metal Gear MKII......I must admit I'm not that much into Metal Gear Solid, but I wondered if this Metal Gear MKII was featured before in Metal Gear Solid games.....Or is it copied straight from the Snatcher concept? Smile

I'm pretty sure it's from Snatcher. He even looks almost exactly the same Smile
Then again, Snatcher borrowed the idea from the original Metal Gear, but that was along time ago.

iamweasel2, allthough it's bad for us MSX'ers, I'm quite pleased with the treatment they gave those games. I'm wondering how exactly they did it, though....

40 million dollar question : Do you think that konami still has the original source code of metal gear 1 msx?Or is the port just the metal gear rom downloaded from a site and then run through a freeware msx emulator that they made for the sony playstation?

Of course they still have it. Certainly on paper. Konami has always been professional and took care of their copyrights etc.

If this is an emu (i think so) is not the first msx emu from konami, remember the msx game collection for PS1 and saturn, they are emulators, you can capture the ps1 memory in a emulator and dump the msx rom, later it can run it in real msx, bluems, opent, fmsx etc.

If you finish the games you get a time attack mode in the menu... in the attack mode you fight all the bosses in Metal Gear! This must be programmed or not??

it's not an emulator, allthough there may be some form of partial emulation or something.
I know the PS1 game collections for PS1/Saturn, they're clearly emulated and have no additional features. It's different with the versions in MGS3. They might be ported having used the original source code....
either way, the rereleases are quite optimised and do some things that an MSX can't.

I was very annoyed when i went to this website http://www.freewebs.com/addicted68098/MGS/Kojima.htm

it has some biography information about Hideo Kojima and metal gear 1 "His first released game was Metal Gear. It was released in 1987 to critical success, although due to the MSX's obscurity, the initial MSX version of the game was barely well-known in Japan and Europe and many people (especially Americans) didn't play the game until it was ported to the Nintendo Entertainment System (although went through numerous changes during the conversion process and Kojima was not directly involved). The game featured Solid Snake, a rookie soldier who has been sent to the fortified state of "Outer Heaven" to stop a nuclear equipped walking tank known as "Metal Gear." The game was unique by being the first successful stealth-based game, in which the player is encouraged to avoid visual contact with the enemy as opposed to engaging in direct confrontation (this was done due to the graphical limitations of the MSX, since the hardware couldn't handle scrolling very well, nor display too many moving objects at once)."

Now seriously isn't that ridiculus?Could nes handle something better than msx?Msx had hardware sprites. And i think the graphics and sprites of metal gear 1 are ok (though sometimes there is flickering when there are too many sprites on screen).

Also msx in japan was in huge success in 1987.Msx standar i think started to decline after 1988 and konami didn't stop making games until 1990.Also there was a translated english version (with many dialogues removed though)

It's a shame that sometimes people with no knowledge of history of computer game industry write articles that are inaccurate like this one.

the rereleases are quite optimised and do some things that an MSX can't.

Since i have been unable to play mg3 could you tell me what are the additions in the original metal gear? And about the things that msx couldn't do?

Best regards
