For this year’s edition of the contest, Spanish developer Fregarni crafted a huge update upon a classic title. Compared to the originals, this port features drastic improvements in both graphics and sound.

To be precise, it’s a re-imagining of a game called Automania, also known as Manic Mechanic. Among C64 and ZX Spectrum users, it was a well-known 80s platformer by Mikro-Gen. It’s part of their Wally Week series, that spans 5 titles in total.

If you'd like to find out more, we humbly refer to the official MSXdev site.

Enjoying MSXdev? In that case, please consider donating to the contest.

It would be good not to ask for the name when the score is less than 100 for example because at the beginning it is very easy to die and it's boring that the name is asked every time even with a score of zero.

A little sound would be good when the character dies.

It says that the music is played only on MSX2 but that is not the case. What is the true condition?

Hello everyone,

Thank you very much for having played this game and also for your comments and contributions to improve this first version of the game. I didn't have a beta tester to present it to MSXdev. After collecting them, I have made a new version of the game including your input and advice.

The improvements of this new version are:

  • Reduced the difficulty of the game so that it is not frustrating to play (detection of collisions with enemies).
  • Music in the menu, credits and during the game, both for MSX-1 and MSX-2 (now plays more than one channel during the game).
  • Variation of the background of the screen (colors, bricks) in some levels.
  • Playing an FX after the death of the avatar.

Regarding entering the name after each game, with the relaxation of the difficulty that the game now has (in collision detection), I hope it won't be so heavy. I have not modified it because it was a feature of the original game.
