Funet has asked different maintainers from old computer systems to remove copyrighted material. Funet wanted to make sure they wouldn't run into legal troubles in the future.
Since the current maintainer of msxarchive, doesn't get any funds from noone he is paying for the hosting by himself, so he is not going to take expensive hosting.
Besides that, the main problem isn't the bandwith he has available, but that some person(s) from Brazil are have made it a hobby to use automated downloaders that keep leeching all the MSX files over and over again. This would give problems with any hoster, even if they advertise "unlimited". The is always some small print that will read that if they think it's too much, they can shut you down anyway.
Since the used Brazil IP's are banned now, the issue should be resolvesd by next month. But since they already used up a large amount of this months bandwith, msxarchive will be down for the rest of the month. Hopefully it will stay online after this month.
Des anybody knows on what amount of bandwith we are talking ?
I'm in the hosting business and also an MSX fan, maybe i can work something out.
Could we quit making notice of this every time?
perhaps must think in distributed download like torrent.
@Rikusu,
I understand your reasons for this, but I am afraid it's hard to work against human nature. If such a site goes down (for some time) you are bound to find messages about it on the biggest MSX Comunity
@Luppie,
Right now, the bandwith they have is about 175GB a month. This proved to be enough before this leeching started. I don't have the exact numbers, but the maintainer told me that sometimes 80GB a day is leeched now.
On the other hand, since you are in the hosting business and you might can help with this, you can also make some config on a server that prohibits this kind of leeching.
@SD-Snatcher,
That could be usefull for the full archive, but msxarchive also provides hosting for pictures, datasheets, etc...
@TFH
175GB a month is in hosting business not that much. 2.4TB is a bit trickier. I'm also in the 'hosting business' and like Luppie willing to help.
Maybe we can share some load, or providing some good mirrors ?
Well may be owner can cap individual downloads to like 5kb/s, and set a limit of 15 megs per IP per day. And sell DVD sets with complete archive to support hosting costs.
This approach wouldn't really hurt casual users, but would effectively prevent bandwidth hogs from doing their repeated downloads, while providing alternative to obtain full archive on DVDs.
Or post the DVD ISO files on the Usenet.
@Madshark,
That is already what I thought ;-) And as for posting it on Usenet: Well, that would solve the issue on a short notice, but not on the long run. And it wouldn't solve the issue of .PDF's and other graphical files which are hosted for other websites.
@Dhau
Limiting bandwith would be a good solution, but would require some config on the server. Right now, msxarchive doesn't have it's own server, it only uses space on a virtual server.
I can offer a hosting space on a Linux server incl. control panel.
I'm not a web developer but i know there are download scripts that requires a Capcha confirmation to tell the download server your a human and not a leeching bot.
Maybe the owner of MSX archives, Madshark and me can do a conference call or chat to see what possibilites there are.
For the record, i come from The Netherlands, so if the owner and madshark are also Dutch then we can meet (for example on the MSX fair in Bussum on Oct. 6th to talk things thru)
