On Compile Diskstation Special 1 - Spring Edition, there's some kind of Mahjong called USA-Jong:

Quite lenghty Software DB link

Not sure if Shanghai is something different than Mahjong, but yours truly doesn't really know the difference and doesn't have to know. :)

There is one other Shanghai game I know of: Super Shanghai Dragon's Eye. The best of the lot if you ask me.

It is actually Big smile

Mahjong is a game played with a certain set of tiles . Is like a card-game and quite similar to Rummy ( you have to form 3 sets of 3 equal or sequential cards and a set of 4) I think.

Shangai ( and all his relatives as famous windows 3.11 TaiPei, and a lot of games with Mahjong in the title) is a puzzle game that uses the beautiful set of tiles of the Mahjong game, but without any other relationship to the REAL mahjong game.

The Konami and Game Arts Mahjong Games are the REAL tile game.

Mmmm... Yes, it looks like a numerical version of Mahjong ( seeing the way people is arranging the tiles forming groups of numbers like in the card game Rummy)

Altough Mahjjong is a chinese game is very popular in Japan due to gambling possibilities, and it was quite popular in the USA at the beginning of 20th century ( if I'm right).

Normally you play with 4 people ( each one a wind - east, north, south, west), but in japan has become very popular h2h games and you can find thousands of 2 players arcade versions of Mahjong in Mame ( most of them strip-poker style :P )
Even NeoGeo console had a special pad with multiple buttons for playing Mahjong games :)

Yes, I am only looking for SHANGHAI (or same game with altered name) tile games, not those Mahjong card games.

I am puzzled why "Mahjong" is used as a name for Shanghai type tile games? Is it because some westerners program Shanghai versions without knowledge about game name origins? Or do japanese/chinese also call Shanghai style games with "Mahjong"?

To me "Mahjong" is only for those card games.

this looks a bit like what I mean, but there´s something different, screenshots are small, so I can´t be sure, but looks like there is just one layer of tiles.

In Shanghai there are many layers of tiles, you have to remove upper tile layers first before you can see (and use) lower tile layers. Also you have to remove outermost tiles first.

Simply, basic idea of Shanghai is bit like (but just a bit) those familiar card games where all cards are turned upside down and you have to guess where are two same cards.

Activision's Shangai II it's the best by far (the second link in your first post). I got it for several platforms and it's a great game. I've played mostly the Amiga version; so I'm not sure about the MSX2 one; but it has some nice playing modes and variants Smile
