GFX9000 Rulez!!
And don't forget, the Moonsound isn't available anymore. Well, technically, it's on pre-order, but when will it be produced? With the VSU you will for sure be able to have one. I want one
Well, I could want one too; but will it be seriously built or will it never be more than a bulky prototype?. Is there an estimated size of how much can it measure when finished?. The level of integration must be pretty high if you want to fit all that ICs in a decent space.
Btw, I still want an easy to build and cheap enhancement to the old and trusty TMS9929.
Salamander2: most of your points are clear, and not questionable at all: it's about availability of hardware. My point is this: the VSU is imho too big to have fully-VSU-supporting games working on our (European) systems. And I don't think us Europeans are going to invest in a VSU, esp. those who already have a fully equipped system (G9k, Moonsound, IDE/CF etc.) If the VSU would be this: v9990, OPL4, IDE/CF interface, (ethernet?), then it would be the perfect all-in-one update device for your region. And many people around here can then play your games/demos because quite a few people have the same config! Only difference would be that we have separate carts where you have a big board with everything.
So, the advantages/disadvantages of a limited board (1 chip of each kind):
+ Content also works in Europe on our current systems
+ With less chips it's cheaper (following earlier discussions about the price of the 1chipMSX, $400 is a lot of money in your region)
+ I think there's less development time required for a finished game
- Less layers and graphical tricks, however the G9k on its own is quite capable of doing good games already
ro, what do you think about the TMS and VDP? Epic fail or epic victory?
Mmm, failure ... beep.
Dunno, it has it flaws sure. But hell, we got those chips and we dealed with it. Maybe THAT's exaclty what made MSX so cool. Looking back on what was possible these days, concerning videochips, I'd say it was a good choice. you can always wait for something better, but how long should you. Oh well...

Awesome quote: 100% agree
And about lack of developments for beasts such as gfx9000: IMHO it should help a lot if those hw extensions were fully emulated, at least for those choosing cross-development.
I doubt you'd ever develop for it tho, emulated or not
I was not talking about me. Just trying to point that imho a full emulation of the card should boost the amount of developments for it, that's all. GFX9000 is a fine piece of hw, but, as you've stated, it is not for me
.
wolf:
i think we met a consensus of ideas and directions.
actually, $400 is my MONTHLY PAYMENT. i'm freelnacer selling software and hardware repair in my city.
and i'm not embarassed to reveal it.
i'm not begging for an opportunity ou discounts for the OCM or whatever msx i want to buy.
obvisoully i will buy the computer like any other independent the price or taxes applyed of
the government from my countryif it suits my needs. my primary interest consist in KNOWLEDGE.
if i could produce a peice of software in the new hardware using the learned knowlegde, and try to sell it in the msx associated market, the money will eventually return. and pay my investiment.
the problem consists if you cannot use my software in YOUR msx. thats the point.
u can associate it that the msx market....is far from...warm to produce a large scale software...
if we have no compatibility in the machines, the numbers in my profit will slump hard. because
THE MAIN INSTALLED BASE OF THE ACTUAL "MORE POWERFULL" msx resides out of my country.
so the obvius target is for the country(ies) with the most numerous regular updated machines installed base.
by the way
the msx along the years after its commercial death has been treated as a rich users niche market
in some areas...
and not following the original ideal standard proposed by nishi.
i think our chat is escaping the scope of this post in the forum.
i will open another one discussing the standard in my point of view
(i know i will risk flame wars because of this...)
That's right, but nowadays, people only make MSX 1 games and MSX2 (+, Turbo R) are very underappreciated, let alone high Tech extensions like the GFX9000. But personally, I would like to see high spec games using Turbo R, GFX9000, Moonsound, Z380, etc. If someone is working on such a game I would gladly help (graphics, music).
