I'm thinking to buy a MSX on next year (not in hurry), my question is...

Should I get a MSX 2+ or a TurboR ?

I hear TR isn't 100% compatible with all MSX titles, is that true ?

Thanks,
Gradius

If you're just into japanese games either the MSX2+ or TR will do fine. There are a very few TR software and the only benefit of that computer is the 256k/512k Ram. Useful for playing european software like translated version of Snatcher.

TRs will definitely costs over $300 but MSX2+ can be bought for half that, sometimes $100.

True, but only because it doesn't have the cassette port. Not major loss, you can find mostly all those cassette games on disk.

i have :
a msx2 with 256kb ram
a msx2+ with 64kb ram and turbo 5Mhz + fm sound
a turboR with 256kb ram

and i rarely use msx2+ , i think my msx2 with 256kb is the most used.
I play megarom with megaflash 512 + scc but the extra ram is usefull for me for msxdos2 and having subdirs with my mass storage and a few more programs.
I use turbo R for coding/compiling long programs or running long runtime prgorams like converting images , compiling asm or turbo pascal.

i think if i had expanded my msx2+ to 512kb internal i would sell my msx2.

as rolins says i would care for ram size , for me the criterias are :
1- ram internal ( no slot occuopied for external mapper )
2- speed of cpu ( i tend to think that 7Mhz is as nice as turboR and 5Mhz is not ridicoulous)
3- FM internal ( no slot occupied )
4- 110V/60Hz : additional cost of converter and my junk/spare TV does not take 60Hz
5- nice VDP of msx2+/turboR that enables good scrolling on some games and display nice photos.
6- brand / case design

You get everything with a turboR without any upgrades or DIY project .

True, but only because it doesn't have the cassette port. Not major loss, you can find mostly all those cassette games on disk.
There is also TRCAS program that allows you to connect cassette player to MSX tR... Or you can use for example rMSX virtual cassette player to load cassette games... I think it is a bit too much to say that MSX tR is not fully compatible as there are workarounds easyly available. Bigger problem is that all MSX games from early years are not MSX compatible. (Click here for examples)

If you plan to just play games, then MSX2 is propably best option. If you want to run all MSX software, then I suggest MSX tR. The softwares that are available for MSX2+ are even less than softwares that are available for MSX tR... and MSX tR can run all MSX2+ software...

I suggest, a simple MSX2, for my case, I programmer only with
MSX1 and MSX2, because with MSX2+ is not possible programmer
in basic system. Than for MSX2+ there are little videogames, and
still for MSX TURBO-R thare are still little but little videogames.
I suggest a simple MSX2 with the GRAPHICS9000+
cartridge fm-pac it is better.

LOL@gasparrini!

You say that there's little software available for MSX2+ and turbo-R; admittedly, that's true. Apart from the fact that there's some turbo-R exclusive stuff available, turbo-R users also benefit from working in e.g. the boosted DOS2 and the speedup in general. But then, you recommend a MSX2 with GFX9000?! Dude, there's practically no stuff available for GFX9000. I support the cartridge and its existence heavily, but a software library still needs to come around today...

Either way, the FM-PAC is a good bonus indeed. My ideas:
- Do you have $200 or less? Go for a MSX2, preferrably with memory expanded to at least 512K. FM-PAC/Music Module is a nice bonus.
- Do you have $200-$500? Go for a MSX turbo-R, preferrably with memory (expanded to) at least 512K. FM-PAC is internal, Music Module is still a nice add-on.
- Do you have $500+? CF-IDE and MoonSound are logically the first expansions that come to my mind. And of course a slot expander to connect the whole shebang.

Music Module is practical for 90's demo's/musicdisks/diskmagazines, but it's a bit out of order these days. I mean, when's the last time someone made something new for the Music Module?

And hey, what's the last time someone made a thing at all for the GFX9000, or MSX2 for that matter? Just to show...

wofl_: that's not the point, is it? I mean, there's boatloads of software available for the Music Module. If you're new to the system and wanna have a go at what's available, the Music Module would be a nice extension.
