Hello,

This isn't really new, I have been considering to release games for the MSX for a few years now, but for a reason or another that never happened... until now.
Well, let’s say I am strongly considering the idea again, as I have some ColecoVision hardware on the makings that would benefit from cross platform development.
I have been involved with ColecoVision development for a while now, and I was able to release some arcade ports during that time. My plans are to release those same games for the MSX2 (obviously with updated graphics and sound), in cartridge format. The first such game would be Pac-Man Collection, which includes the original Pac-Man arcade game, as well as Ms Pac-Man and Pac-Man Plus.
In other to determine if such idea is viable or not, I would need to know the size of the MSX market for new games. So I would like to ask you guys to send me an email if you would be interested in such games. Price will probably be the same as my ColecoVision games, US$40. That includes the game cartridge and professionally printed box and manual. Box would be my new model book-style (gatefold, opens like a book).
Pac-Man Collection would be a MSX2 game, with several advantages over my ColecoVision version (which uses the TMS9928). The game code came straight from the arcade, so the game plays just like you were playing it on MAME. Timings are arcade perfect. Also, with the MSX2 version you have the option to use a Konami cartridge with SCC on slot 2 and get 100% arcade perfect sound. Otherwise you get PSG sound, which is close but cannot reproduce the exact arcade timbres. Oh, and btw, Wolf created the opening song for Pac-Man Collection, based on the 80s hit Pac-Man Fever... Smile
After that next game would be Space Invaders Collection or Donkey Kong. Then Arkanoid and Pengo, with possibly more to come in the future if sales are ok. Even though some of those games are already available for the MSX they are all MSX1 games.
Anyway, you can find some info about Pac-Man Collection for the MSX here:
http://opcodegames.com/pacmancol_msx.htm
And you can play a old demo version (which didn't include sound, didn't let you play beyond level 2 and included only the compressed screen mode (final version should have a full screen mode with vertical scroll)).

Video showing an early build of Donkey Kong for the ColecoVision (no sound):

Arkanoid (ColecoVision), no sound, not playable, missing lots of stuff:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WI4J28ZjIHc
Something I have planned for the future (this early build is running on a MSX2+)…

Again, I need a minimum number of people interested because of all the costs involved. I am going to need .a new cartridge PCB with bank switch and save game (based on my ColecoVision MegaCart), and also a new and exclusive cartridge plastic case, complete with embossed logo .on the back, just like my ColecoVision games. We are going to top notch presentation here, guys.

Ok, so if you interested, please contact me: eduardo at opcodegames.com. I will place names in a list and if we can get lets say 80 names or more we would be good to go.

Thanks!

hard to say... a big part of the sells is still at fairs
I think that the # of charts sold depends on the # of fairs wher you can distrbute the game

PS
I would buy the chart: msx2 had almost no new game since MB2

For the SCC in slot 2 part: I hope you don't mean the 'technical' slot 2, but that the game has a decent SCC search routine in any slot.

Also, you might consider to sell the game including an SCC chip. E.g. Manbow 2 was released including SCC chip and a Flash chip which is partially used to store the savegames on. Sounds useful for your application! Information at Sunrise, who is also on many MSX fairs, so who might be interesting for you (and for them) as a distributor...

Regarding your sales market, very hard to say. I suppose sunrise or BitWise could have idea on this in general.

You have converted Pacman and Ms. Pacman (and Plus) to Colecovision? Can we see some screenshots or videos somewhere? Smile It would be a nice idea to port those already existing Colecovision Pac-conversions to MSX-1 also! And then put them to same cartridge with MSX2 Pac-games! Smile And add option to game selection screen to start either MSX-1 or MSX-2 versions. Smile
Wolf created the opening song for Pac-Man Collection, based on the 80s hit Pac-Man Fever... Smile
I have that 45RPM single! Big smile I like both sides! Big smile
After that next game would be Space Invaders Collection or Donkey Kong.
Are you gonna include other Donkey Kong games too?

Then Arkanoid and Pengo,

You are bit late.... Wink you haven´t read msx topics from the web in last years too often, haven´t you?

Unless you Really want to do another one for MSX2... hopefully not... :P But if you do one for MSX1 then it´s fine for me! ;)

As far as it concerns me, we continue the negotiations. The carts (produced small ones) are already available. A package like manbow2 could most likely also be usefull to put coleco vision carts in it. And the scc+ (psg+scc) will reach me in one week time so that I can test
Better said most of the investments are already done

I really like the idea of making arcade perfect conversions of late seventies and early eighties coin-op games. Smile

Do you have other arcade games in mind, other than what you mentioned in your post? Smile There´s lots of good old games waiting for MSX conversions! Smile Maybe some conversion could be some not-so-well-known arcade game, I mean, that most of us have already played donkey kongs and space invaders and arkanoids a lot.... Smile conversion of not-so-well-known arcade game could be refreshing! Smile Maybe it could be some interesting variation or bootleg of some well-known arcade game, if you want so. Smile As there were lots of arcade games, which were same than original game, but with different graphics and/or bit different game play. Smile

I don´t mean to turn you down, I really appretiace your efforts! Smile I just wanted to give some ideas to you! Smile

Ok, I just watched your first link and saw your Colecovision conversions. MSX ports were of course just what I expected to see, but others were Something What I Really Wished My MSX Games To Be Back In The Eighties!!!!

I am ready to buy Wizard Of Wor if you port it to MSX someday!! Smile At last there is one person who knows that game and likes it like I do! Smile Over past twenty years I have wished and imagined that I could have monochrome sprite version of Wizard Of Wor on my MSX-1 or Commodore 64 look-a-like (most 64 sprites were monochrome too in WOW). Of course I secretly wished to have version which looked just like your Coleco mock-up!!!! Big smile And now I just saw That Very Thing on machine which is almost MSX!!!!

Your Donkey Kong mock-ups are really arcade perfect!! (only very small difference because different graphics chips between arcade and colecoSmile) This is just what I have thought in my mind what MSX conversion could (and should!!) have been!!!!

Compare these two:

http://opcodegames.com/dkarcade.php

http://www.generation-msx.nl/msxdb/softwareinfo/2918

Even MSX version looks better than spectrum one, it´s still far away from those mock-ups!

Rally-X looks hellishly good too!! Quite different when compared to Namcot´s MSX-1 original....

Now I am even more eager to say that it would be FOOLISH not to include Coleco-to-MSX ports in same collection cartridge!!!!

There are many people who are still interested in MSX developments, only not in collecting or paying for physical collector's items (if only because they mainly use MSX through emulation).

The costs you are mentioning seems to cover physical hardware, materials, printing etc.. What is your point of view to release the game files, as is also done in the MSX gaming competitions? Obviously most or all of the costs you mention don't apply there.

I second the idea of releasing less well-known games that don't have a proper MSX port yet. Not only original arcade games; there were many games or entire franchises on 80's platforms that didn't reach MSX.
